Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I was wondering if anybody can help wilth this question. I was thinking of getting the motorola rdu2080 radio regular edition and not the murs edition. And I was wondering if it came with the following frequencies. The main frequency I want is 154.570 the other frequencies are for listening purposes only and they are 151.625,154.600,and 155.220. I know murs edition has the main frequency I want but does the non murs edition have the main frequency along with the others that I would like?

Thanks for the help. I have just one last question. Do I need a license for a murs channel frequency 154.570? I only want that channel because know body in the area is using the frequency that much if they do it is very little and I can live with that. The radios you buy in the stores have to many people on them. If I have to how do I get a call sign so I can use this channel.

You do not need a license for 154.570 as it is one of the five license-free MURS channels. The only requirements are that you use a Part 95 certified radio and 2 watts maximum transmit power. The RDV2080 is only capable of 2 watts output and I believe it is Part 95 certified, so it should be good in that regard.

The problem is that the software for these radios only lets you change between the 27 predefined VHF frequencies listed in the manual. As far as I can remember you can NOT program any other frequencies into the radio. This would be a problem for you as the only frequency listed that you wish to use is 151.625. All of the predefined frequencies in the list require a license to transmit on.

You may want to look at the Motorola CP200 and CP200XLS, or the Icom F3011 and F3021. All of these can be programmed to any VHF frequency you want, although the five MURS frequencies are still the only ones you can transmit on without a license. They are also more rugged and have more features than the RDX radios. The Icom radios are also fairly inexpensive and the programming software is easy to purchase.
