• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have little to no room where I live but i am interested in a base setup.
I've looked into the possibility of a W3 spectra for local ham and RX.
How can I find and know for sure on eBay I'm getting a unit compatible with a W3 control head?
I'm looking for 450-512mhz as most of my RX only is 470-490mhz
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Model number should be T or D04"S"KH9PW3AN "S"=450-482 "R"=438-470 if you are going to need P-25 the flash code must start with a "1" or "5" most other options in the radio can be modified with non M software. Also if you elect to buy an "S" radio you will have to hex edit the software for ham channels.

I see at least one radio on e-bay that fits you bill other than it's 110 watt.

I'm looking for the smaller 45 watt unit. The 110 watt would just take up to much room. The local repeater is on the GWB so less than 2 miles from me. I have a small astron unit that I think the smaller spectra will sit a top perfectly. I appreciate all the info. I'm looking for spend $125-$150.

A Spectra, or Astro Spectra comes in 4 UHF splits. There is no 450-512 split version. Newer XTL's do that.
Range-1 403-433 MHz
Range-2 438-470 MHz
Range-3 450-482 MHz
Range-4 482-512 MHz

The farthest frequency would be 483.00625 (FDNY Citywide 2 RX only)
Also is this spectra capable if hosting a feed?

Using that FDNY freq will depend on the hardware in the radio UNLESS you buy a 482 mhz radio, and again if the firmware allows 6.25 channels some do some don't. Again you are trying to spread all over the UHF band, the radio may or may not work, you might be better off with an XTL.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm not really concerned about the P25 as there isn't much P25 in the clear in NYC. I have a VHF XTS5000R that I'm gonna be parting with soon and decide from there. I want something that will fit in my space I have. I'm looking at the XTL and XPR mobile.
