Motorola USA has announced its intention to launch a tender offer to acquire a controlling interest in Vertex Standard Co, Ltd. Vertex
Standard is the parent company of Yaesu. Motorola will own 80 percent of Vertex Standard; Tokogiken, a privately held Japanese
company, controlled by current president and CEO of Vertex Standard Jun Hasegawa, will retain 20 percent, forming a joint venture. The total purchase price for 80 percent of the outstanding shares on a fully diluted basis will be approximately US $108 million.

Don't know what's so great about Motorola buying Vertex. In fact, it makes me sick. Motorola is monopolistic and their equipment is overpriced. It'll be a sad day when I have to start forking over three times what a radio is worth because it'll be a MotorolaVertex.

So, in a sort of indirect way, Motorola will be making scanners!!
I don't think Vertex Standard/Yaesu makes a "scanner" per se, but they do make a wideband receiver.

I don't know about scanners, but they will be at least indirectly involved in making ham equipment. Maybe we'll get some P25 ham gear.

No, we won't, not directly from yaesurola. From another forum, and said better than I could...

Won't happen, for two reason: The amateur manufacturers don't see P25 on the ham bands as anything but a small curiosity shared by a minority, and they don't want cheap P25 gear competing with their expensive equipment.

yep, thanks to all the turds on Ebay who are selling those FT-60's and VX-150's as "field programmable police/fire/ems" radios, you can rest assured P25 ham gear from any of the major manufacturers let alone ma M is a pipe dream. they aren't about to shoot themselves in the foot. aside, P25 phase 1 doesn't offer anything spectacular to the average ham where he would go out and drop 700-1000 bucks for an HT. The old farts around here are still pissing and moaning about using PL on repeaters being required by the local coordination body, and their still clinging to the CW keys fighting the CW wars- P25 yeah...maybe in 25 years...

A little enforcement would go a long way. If the FCC would go after agencies that buy/use/allow non-certified transceivers on their systems, and the individuals (usually volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel) who use ham equipment on public safety channels, then they'd be harder to sell for unauthorized uses.

Don't be so quick to specify that it's "usually volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel" that use modded radios. I was a firefighter for almost seven years, and I never saw one person who had a modded radio, but in that same time I knew five police officers who had them.

Guess there had "interoperability" before it was cool

In my experience, it is usually volunteer firefighters, etc. Your experience is different. That's OK, it doesn't make either of us wrong.
