If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am thinking of purchasing a Motorola Convertacom for a U.H.F. XTS-3000. The radio will be used for monitoring. Will I have any issues with reception, using an external antenna on my vehicle? I was debating on trying this first, instead of buying a mobile radio.

Thank you in advance.

XTS Series Convertacoms are very buggy with reception using the ext antenna because of the connection. They are also old, outdated, and no longer sourced for parts. If you can stomach a mobile UHF XTL2500 for $350+ Ebay has them.

Hmm...I have two XTVA's and a UHF XTS3000 did not work in it. The XTVA's I have use the older W3 HHCH and the display did not convey the radio info (Nothing appeared and it did not light up). I believe when I keyed the radio it beeped as well. I did not keep the 3000, so I did not investigate further, especially just to see if it could receive as you want to do.

Note:
- I have two XTS5000's and they work fine in the XTVA's
- The XTS3000 worked fine on its own.
- I do not have a TX/RX problem using the antenna adapter and I use one of them at home...with an external antenna up in the air to make the most of the lower power to hit the repeaters.

As JimD56 pointed out, a mobile radio may be a better option. I use an XTL5000 in my vehicle. Still, if all you want to do is listen perhaps just use a scanner, or just connect the antenna directly to your 3000 as you considered.
