The MPSCS is upgrading from system release 6.5 to 6.9. This upgrade will allow for the next generation of dispatch consoles, high performance data sites, next generation base stations and increased system security.

Here is an outline of the system outages that will occur during the upgrade:

4/29/08 1:00a - 5:00a: A 5 minute site outage will occur at each tower site. Towers will be upgraded sequentially and no two adjacent towers will be down at the same time. Mobile radios should roam to adjacent towers when a site is down.

4/30/08 1:00a - 1:15a: All towers will revert to "Site Trunking" while a major component is rebooted at each master site. This will occur in all zones at the same time. All radios will see "Site Trunking".

4/30/08 1:45a - 3:15a: A major piece of hardware will be replaced at each master site. All towers will revert to "Site Trunking" during this time.

5/1/08 2:30a - 4:00a: A major software upgrade will be done at each master site. Each zone will observe a 90 minute "Site Trunking" event during this window.

5/6/08 12:25p - 5/7/08 2:00a: Radio Control Manager (RCM) terminals not functional. Emergency alarms will still work between radios but the RCM's will not display the alarm.

5/7/08 1:05a - 2:15a: Dispatch consoles (Centracomm Gold Elite) directly connected (wireline) to the MPSCS system will not function. Control stations connected to dispatch consoles will continue to work.

5/7/08 1:10a: A Zone Controller switch will occur in all zones at each master site. "Site Trunking" at all sites for up to 15 minutes.

5/7/08 1:05a - 9:40a: Mobile Data system will be off-line for upgrade work.

5/13/08 9:00a - 5:00p: Mobile Data system will be off-line for upgrade work.

5/14/08 9:00a - 11:00a: Mobile Data system will be off-line for upgrade work.

During this time, many departments will most likely revert to their back-up radio system for all operations.

With these upgrades will there be any thing different positive or negative when using the Radio Shack pro-96/2096? Also could someone explain "site trunking" with the MPSCS system? Thank you in advance, I do appreciate any info.

No impact on your RS receiver. Site trunking happens when the link to the zone controller is lost and the site continues to handle traffic, but only as a stand alone. Simulcast sites act as one site as well. Hope this helps?

The one issue I've seen in the past when a site goes into site trunking is that all of the access restrictions for that site are disabled until it re-establishes it's connection to the zone controller.

So, for example, while the Northville site is in Site trunking mode, don't be suprised if you see Detroit PD units affiliating to that site. They won't be able to communicate with their dispatch while their radio is on that site though. As soon as the site re-establishes the link to the zone controller, they'll be forced off the site.

This happened last summer when the Northville site was struck by lightning (according to the MSP dispatchers), and ended up in Site Trunking mode for awhile. There were Detroit PD and FD radios affiliating to that site while in that mode.

Got to love them routers :) Normally, everything comes back after a load / re-boot, but alas, the lonely router that needs a minor modification. The joy of upgrades.
