Programmed this one in a few weeks back. I live in St. Mary's County and was wondering if anyone else down here monitors this one.

In Frederick Co it is used by the local MSP B guys as a talkaround, car to car channel. You get great stuff, but it's very short range, less than 5 miles on a good mobile antenna...

I seem to get the same here in St. Mary's. I don't have it in my Mobile rig but get decent copy from here at the house. I was wondering if it is supposed to be an encrypted or secure frequency for them.???

Judging from the type of chatter I hear I strongly think these people think this is encrypted when in fact it is not. Or at least not all the time. I get comms that contain quite the colorful language. Heavy use of profanity and the intermittent use if racial name calling. To be specific the use of the "N" word.

I just got back from speaking with a local Sheriff's Deputy about this. Does security at the local convenience store I frequent. I know him a bit and am comfortable approaching him regarding this. I asked him if he knew an MSP officer , as a friend, well enough to talk to about this, off the record and without creating a paper trail, and at least make sure those folks knew this is not an encrypted frequency before all hell breaks loose.

From what I have heard so far in the last couple of months of paying attention to this frequency, and recording it, the racial commentary is to such a degree that if they don't get a grip I can see people getting dismissed over this crap. I don't wanna see this happen so I have kind of decided to at least try to get the word to them in a fashion that will draw the least amount of attention to myself as well as to the officers who use the frequency in such an unprofessional manner.

They may just be thinking that no one is listening.....or that it is a lower TX power than their normal channels. However thats why supervisors say you should always conduct yourself as if someone has a video camera pointed at you. Of course no one is perfect but you have to be careful what you say over the radio or the computer...I know at least in my department the computer messages are even reviewed on occasion. I cant imagine if a supervisor heard that kind of chatter going on.

I am going to try to make a couple of low level attempts to get the word to them. Some of the commentary I have heard "WILL" get people fired quick, fast & in a hurry.

I don't want to call down there. I think the risk of accidentally talking to the wrong person is too high. I think If I can just get someone to pass the word around amongst their co-workers that should end this.

If they are saying things that could get them fired, then they deserve to be fired. I've met enough closet racists working in law enforcement to turn my stomach. If you cannot enforce the laws evenly, you have no business being in law enforcement...just my take.

I agree Ben. That's it why I have chosen to make an issue of it. But I don't want to do it in such a way as to make it apeear that I have a hard on for these officers. Thus far I have spoken to two people about this. One Sheriff's Deputy and one MSP Dispatcher.

My intent is to let them have some time to get the word spread around. If after some time this does not diminish that I may very well call the Duty Officer or something. But I did not want to go that route as a first step. Plus I suspect posting here will bring some attention to it.

This is something that I suspect if I don't handle properly I could draw unwarranted attention to myself and be subjected to unwarrented vehicle searches.

Right now it is just "some scanner nut" that is saying something. But by my having actually spoken to a couple people, and advising them that I have spoken to others as well. I am sure they are at least going to handle it with some seriousness. The Sheriff's Deputy I spoke to about this was a Black fellow and I have allot of faith in his abilities, 20 Years on the force.

I think the two folks I have spoken with thus far have the experience needed to handle this in an appropriate manner as they see fit. If not, I am recording the frequency and if need be can actually have an officer listen and make their own decision knowing some nut is recording this junk.

If you say something, they may quit using it alltogether.

I would rather not hear anything at all on this frequnecy then hear stuff that could do nothing more than draw allot of unwarrented to attention to my local police department.

I have to argree with you on that. The Department may very well handle it as an internal matter, ie: have their Seargants, and above in rank start paying closer attention to this. In this day and age, stuff like this should NOT be allowed to continue. Please let us know how it turns out if you can. Thanks for the post.

Will Do. But I guess they only way I will know it stops is through future monitoring. I doubt very seriously I will be getting any follow ups from them. LMAO

But I decided to pull a R-8500 off of it's current tasking and set it on the freq on my best antenna and start recording on it. This will tell me whether they stop or not.

I m sure you are familiar then. These folks must think they are secure if they are talking like this. I am just trying to let them know. "Hey Meathead, You are not on a secure channel"

Personally, I plan to keep what I hear on this (and another ‘unlisted’ channel) to myself. I don't see anything good coming out of bringing this up to the ‘authorities’. It will merely drive the offending officers further underground and cause other (good) officers to dislike scanners even more than they already sometimes do.

The type of officers you hear disparaging other ethnic groups on the radio always trip themselves up sooner or later.

Your Mileage May Vary.

I dont agree

I dont agree that we keep talking about this & I agree with scansomd keep it to yourself (not that you havent told everyone already) and they will hang themselves, like scansomd said your input to them may vary. If you dont do anything about it can we stop talking about it and if you do tell someone can we please stop talking about it. It doesnt belong on this thread!

I would watch how you word your statements 308, as a STATE employee, you are covered under STATE EEO rules and can be held to the same rules as the officer violateing it if you know about it and do know report it or knowing and attemping to cover it up.

just a word of caution.

Well, just maybe you folks are right. I'll just stick my head and the sand and keep paying my tax dollars and maybe after my tax dollars pay for several more years of training for these guys 'then' they'll get popped for doing this stuff.

Hopefully their replacements will learn from their mistakes.

I'm sorry to see this thread at all and also believe it shouldn't have been posted. It isn't that I condone what you report they're saying on the channel. I do not. Plus, I find them unbelievably and outrageously stupid for doing it on the airwaves. However, what we're doing is snooping as we enjoy our hobby of listening to someone doing their jobs. In this case it's cops.

Let me ask.....Who among us hasn't said something along the same lines at some point at our own jobs? If it wasn't an ethnic slur, was it maybe a gender slur? Or perhaps you had a good laugh at the expense of someone that works at your business - like that dumbass blonde receptionist - because everyone knows blondes are all dumb as a box of rocks, right?. Or whomever you feel is not quite up to your high standards - perhaps someone with a strange religion to you like a Mormon that's running for President? What if people could listen to your conversations while you're at work? How fair would you feel it was if I could listen to those conversations and then plaster them on a public forum?

It's real easy to get morally outraged and rant about those bigoted sounding cops. Yes indeed - we've learned that a couple of cops in St. Mary's County yakking on a night shift perhaps don't meet some public standard of expected morality. Who the hell does? Should we start firing people for their thoughts and speech?

Personally, I would have just gotten word to them privately through a friend or acquaintance that their chatter can be heard by people with scanners - and their bosses - and let it go at that.
