I'm attempting to find out how long I need my whip antenna to be for my MSP squad car restoration. The original freqencys for this car were between 42.48 and 42.71 .
Any help would be appreciated.

What age is the patrol car? The MSP used both quarter and half-wave antennas on their patrol cars, at one time or another over the years. The center tuning frequency was 42.50 MHz, since this was in the middle of the 42 MHz band.

The quarter-wave antenna would be 1.70 meters in length.

The half-wave antenna would be 3.36 meters in length.

Well, let's dust off the old ARRL Novice License Guide here.
Using Ron's center freq, the formula for calculating antenna length puts your old MSP whip at a quarter wavelength of 5 feet, 6 inches. (234/freq=length in feet)

Agreed... maybe he would be kind enough to post some pictures in the photos section? I remember reading recently about some high school kids who restored an MSP Mustang.

I'm hoping that you will be touring with this vehicle? I'd love to see it in the TC area someday!

And I'd love to bring it. However, TC is a bit far from where I am in K-zoo. The MSP and the MSP Troopers Association have asked if I would make it available for various events such as PR and even funeral events. Any time they have too many requests for thier own 75 to attend. In those cases, they will be picking up the gas tab.
