Before I even start this, I realize there are the majority of you that know the answer to this question and probably have known it for some time. But I don't and I've "tried" to find the answer.

The question?

Are the Mt. Mitchell 2m/440 repeaters up any more?

I've been a licensed ham for close to 20 years, but always operated mobile 99.9 percent of the time. I worked in a job that I was in the car at all hours and all days. Law enforcement, retired now. I used the repeaters a lot. Made long night shifts much easier talking with another LEO in Henderson County a lot.
Got transferred into another job that didn't lend itself to mobile operation so radios, etc. were relegated to storage for many years. Always said to myself that I needed to get them in the house, but never did until yesterday. Couldn't seem to hit my old stand by on Mt. Mitchell last night late when I got my make do set up finished. Went to bed and got up in the night messing with it again and found discussions from back in 2009 that the repeater owners had been told to remove them from the tower, etc. they were on. The last thing I found, still in 2009, said it was being worked out, but I've not been able to find anything to back that up since that date. To top that off a Western NC amateur radio club website doesn't list them either. So, now I'm wondering if in fact they were taken down because it didn't get worked out or what exactly happened.

So that's my "bear with me" reason. I haven't been on a radio in so long I've lost touch with most near everything like that. I need some help.

Thanks

Yes... the repeater is still in operation. In fact you can check into the 6600 net every Saturday night at 9:00 PM.

The repeater is actually located on Clingmans Peak, Mount Mitchell's "sister" peak.

145.190 (negative offset)

Welcome back to amateur radio!!

I know the N4YR 440 repeater is still active as well. 442.225 (+5) [107.2 PL in & out]. Not sure what the big blow up about removing repeaters was about...but like you said, nothing ever came of it. Welcome back to ham radio.

Thanks!!

I appreciate your responses folks! After having been away for so long and seeing what I did it left a sinking feeling much like an old friend had passed away in my absence. Now to get things situated. One thing that hasn't changed in amateur radio in the intervening years. The cost of equipment and my champagne taste coupled with my beer finances.

Later and thanks again!

The best way to keep up to date and get back up to speed on repeater activity/news and hamfests in the SE USA is by becoming a member of the SouthEastern Repeater Association ( SERA).....the SERA REPEATER JOURNAL is their quarterly publication (associate membership for repeater users is $15 a year)...it is a wealth of information and every issue includes multiple repeater databases on all ham bands from 10m-6m-2m-220-440-900-1.2Ghz+++ covering all eight states......listed BOTH by state and frequency.......many articles in every issue and news from every one of the eight states.....also local/regional dealer ads...and hamfest ads and hamfest info.......They also co-ordinate repeater's for owners and the FCC. A fine organization of volunteers doing great work. The magazine is a MUST READ for knowing whats happening LOCALLY in NC about repeaters or hamfests.

The SouthEastern Repeater Association, Inc. :: Home

send your name/callsign/mailingaddress/phone# and $15 for one year ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP (or $30 for two years)

I am NOT associated with SERA....I have been an associate member for 41 years since they first formed in 1971. I have not regreted it.

Welcome back and ENJOY !!!!

good move ! i don't think you'll regret it.....no matter what, the issues you get will still be good Reference Books for both your car and hamshack to look up towns/repeaters/freqs.....i keep a recent issue in my car just in case HI HI

they are published in February, May, August, and November....so hopefully you hit it just right to get the August issue in a few weeks.....they usually come out kinda slow and the post office slows down their delivery even more, so be patient....you can always email them and request the August issue, if it doesn't show up by mid Sept....some issues run very late....they are all volunteers with full time jobs and family HI HI........ENJOY !

i wish more hams would do like you and take advantage of this LOCAL resource....congratulations !
