• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

What's the difference between the MTX 8000 and MTS 2000? They look identical, and seem to perform the same tasks.

They are both in the same same Jedi family, but they are for two different applications.

The MTX8000 is intended for Privacy Plus systems and does not have any Smartnet features. Thus it's not really a public safety radio. The MTS2000 is made for Smartnet systems.

The MTS will do encryption and the MTX won't. The MTS uses Flashport technology and the MTX doesn't.

The MTX also lacks the relay to enable the external antenna connection for a Public Safety Mic; the MTS has this relay.

Depending on the age of your MTX, it will NOT do the NPSPAC channels. This means you can't use it for systems that use control channels in the 866-869MHz region, unless you hack it.

The MTS will display talkgroup and radio IDs, but the MTX won't.

There some more that I'm not thinking of right now, but that'll get you started.

When you say no smartnet features, will it do Type II at all? I saw one on ebay that does type II, and the descrption was almost identical to the MTS 2000 which is why I asked. I get the idea on the other ones. I guess if there's no Flashport then you can't upgrade to do the the 866-869.

It will do Type II Privacy Plus types of systems (such as in use by several business out there... but in the public safety field its just not gonna cut it.

Privacy Plus usually refers to the original Type I systems. Smartnet is a set of features for public safety users such as emergency signaling, remotely monitoring a radio, dynamic talkgroups, radio/TG ID, priority scan, and remote steering. All Smartnet systems use the Type II trunking format.

The MTX8000 will work on both Type I and Type II formats, but does NOT support the Smartnet feature set. This is why they are not suitable for public safety applications, and why public safety users use the MTS2000. The MTS2000 does support the Smartnet feature set.

Hope that helps.
