Nice! What all are you monitoring with those radios? Do you have a roommate? If so, do they also enjoy monitoring or is that a point of contention? :D

Thanks N4YEK!

03msc - I monitor police, fire, ems and the railroads. I actually use that xts for student patrol also. My roommates don't really care because the radios are usually kept really quiet. I acutally did get one of them partially interested, but it didn't last long. I also don't listen when they're there.

OK, cool. That's some very nice hardware you have! What do you have by way of antenna setup for that mobile/base? Antenna mounted outside the window somehow or just on top of a shelf or cabinet?

I'm agree with N4YEK - I'm kind of jealous! Especially considering I have a job and can't afford all of those radios! :D Very nice!

HAHA cifd64 I do get homework, but I am an engineering student so it relates!

03msc - I worked hard as an Ice Hockey referee while I was in high school and made some nice cash. Was able to pay for a car, insurance and gas also. For an antenna I don't know if you can see, but there's a wire on the right going up to an MFJ 1724b mobile dual band antenna I had on my car. I just put it on top of my roommates cabinet. Also behind the laptop is a thin diamond dual band antenna that i use for the portables when I go out and need some better reception.

Yep, saw the wire and thought that might be the case. Looks like you've got the perfect setup for a college dorm/apartment! Thanks for sharing!

None of my local radio systems are on any of the digital formats (well, except the statewide P25 but I can get it on my Pro-106, HP-1, or 996XT) but I've wondered if I might invest in a nice portable NexEdge or TRBO, etc., radio if they did switch over to one of those formats. I know nothing about them, though, as far as programming one of those systems in a radio but I'm sure I could figure it out if the need arose. I've programmed conventional analog radios but none of the digital ones...other than my scanners, of course.

Oh yea its awesome! Yea I mainly got the Nexedge for the railroads and the P25 for stuff at home and a few digital Ham Repeaters here. There is a learning curve to both of the software, but the Motorola is a nightmare... I like Kenwoods better, much more simple. To be honest Id rather have Kenwood over Motorola, but public safety doesn't think that way... Oh well.

Thanks zl2taw!

N8IAA - I am in Connecticut, but its more of a preparation thing plus I never had a vhf radio so I thought why not get one and prepare for the future. Plus I was planning on making an nxdn repeater after my friends got their ham licenses, but like the railroads its a work in progress...

Nice Setup

It's cool to see another dorm room setup. Certainly some nice radios there, especially the NXDN. Here's what I had set up last year, Dorm Room Setup. It's a bit different this year, I'll get some pictures up soon.

Do you have a Amateur Radio club on campus? If not, you should look into it, you'd be surprised how much interest you can generate.

How does it work for student patrol? If it's FPP you just plug in the frequency? Interesting!

Nice collection... It all looks brand new!

jcop225 - Thank god I'm not alone. Yea I was thinking about starting one, but I really don't think there would be much interest. Especially considering the fact I've talked to a lot of people about it and they give me one of those what the hell are you talking about looks.

rjk 165 - It works like any other radio. You put in the input freq and pl for the repeater and then the output freq and pl. When I key up it goes to campus police. FPP is Front Panel Programming so yes if you are familiar with VFO its just like that. It has options for Tx, Rx, PL, DPL, NAC, Tx Type, Rx type, Deviation and the channel name. That's all you can really do without CPS. Everything except the HT1000 and XTS are a year old.
