Florida Today newspaper reports:

Harris Corp. announced Monday that it has entered into a $700 million contract with Florida to provide a state-wide communications network that will connect public safety, law enforcement, public schools and other state and local government agencies.

The contract is for seven-year - base - and also has seven, one-year options.

Called MyFloridaNet-2 or (MFN-2) the system link more than 4,000 sites and provide approximately 4,700 connections via a secure state-wide communications infrastructure using the Harris Trusted Enterprise Network, a dedicated, private-core backbone managed and operated by Harris from its primary network operations center in Melbourne, where Harris is headquartered.

It Ain't This. ..

Just to avoid any confusion, this is NOT the contract for the SLERS replacement. This is the replacement for the SUNCOM network.

That would be correct. AT&T filed a formal protest and lost.

What exactly IS the SUNCOM network?

Because the DMS web site describes it as a framework for procuring and administering wired telecomm hardware and services.

A page separate from the SUNCOM heading describes SLERS and the Florida Interop Network. There's also a page that suggests to me that educational institutions and other entities use an unnamed communications system. So I'm confused here. Thanks.

Basically, it's the State of Florida's wide area telephone system. State agencies/departments can make calls anywhere within the state, between themselves or other state agencies, as if it were a local number.

It's also the conduit for the statewide MotoBridge network.
