I see that Lancaster County has a frequency for NAWAS. Back in the 70's, I used to love listening to what was called the NAWAS circuit at the NWS office in Norfolk.

Is the frequency listed here that same thing where police departments from all over could contact each other? At that time, it was a landline circuit.

If so, where can I find information on how to pick up NAWAS in other areas of the country?

From what I heard only certain county EMAs rebroadcast NAWAS over the air, Lancaster, Sarpy, and Hall counties in Nebraska. It still is a land line.
Douglas county fire dispatch has a channel labeled as NAWAS on their counsels. Don't know if it is the Sarpy rebroadcast or if it a different frequency.

I think its down right now because there's really been no need for it lately, but since the weather is starting to come back around I'm sure Sarpy EMA will probably put it back on the air. There was a short time last year when it was down for some maintenance.

Also once it reaches to a drop, those counties relay it to the others on 39.9.

NAWAS Phones

I have never heard any NAWAS traffic on Sarpy's TRS. Please enlighten me as to what the talkgroup # is. I would be very interested in listening to this talk group.

I have some experience with the NAWAS phone system, and I realize that to carry it on any radio system, that to not miss any traffic, the transmitter/talkgroup would have to be transmitting continuously, whether there is any voice traffic or not.

In other words, a lot of dead-air time. I cannot believe that Sarpy would dedicate 10% of their TRS resources just to carry this.

Storm Spotters are usually Ham Radio Operators. The Storm Spotter frequencies you listed are in the 2 Meter and 70cm Ham bands. The Skywarn net is activated by the local NWS office as needed. Try a search for Skywarn for the area you're interested in.

I was able to hear the NAWAS rebroadcast this afternoon, so it appears it is back up and working.

I can't remember when they do the real good one if its on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings like 930 - 11am 'ish.

I do love the rollcall each morning though. Its awsome to hear all the drops check in.

Its on VHF high band, 155.7450. No where near the Sarpy system.

When does Neal turn this thing on? I have programmed my scanner with 155.745, and I periodically put it in a scan group when I am able to be close-by the scanner and...nada!

Is it on only for the daily check-in's and then severe weather? Please further enlighten me guys.

Thanks!

It isn't that srong of a signal. I could barely here it in Omaha. You will hear the daily check ins and hear the sever weather warnings from NWS in Valley and Hastings, I don't think North Platte is repeated. It really isn't used that much. Do a search on the internet and you find our when it was created and what it's main purpose is for or what it was for. If you don't know it NAWAS stands for National Attack Warning Alter System or something close to that.

Sarpy NAWAS is alive and well on 155.745

Howdy, everyone!

I finally had a chance to listen to the Sarpy County NAWAS last Thursday on the way home from work!

Is the NAWAS signal active all the time, or is it only active during severe weather events? Also, from what I could hear, it almost sounds like a kind of "vox" arrangement that keys the Sarpy County NAWAS.

Pretty interesting stuff, to be sure! At one point, I believe I heard "National Weather, Cheyenne" and they were talking about the extremely gusty northwest winds behind the cold front.

NAWAS is up all the time, just more active during severe weather events. Heard an
all 50 states EMA roll call the other day. Almost like Echolink. CQ DX !!
