Since the Uniden NXDN upgrade, I've been playing around with the NC Fleet Talk system on my 436HP. I have discovered additional sites under the 219 System ID that apparently have duplicate site numbers to some sites listed in the database.

One example is Site # 5. The database shows a Site #5 on Stuart Andrew in Charlotte. I have discovered another Site # 5 that appears to be somewhere near Greensboro with a CC of 452.3375 and RAN of 5.

Another is Site # 4. Besides the Rock Hill site in the database, I'm getting one here in Northeast Davidson County that I believe to possibly be Pores Knob in Wilkes County. It has a CC of 463.6875 with a RAN of 4.

I also have found 2 Site #3's. One from the top of Morrow Mountain with a CC of 451.325 and another from here at home with a CC of 452.0125. Both with a RAN of 3.

Looking at the FCC database, some sites are licensed to Rock Communications in Fort Mill SC and others are licensed to Mobile Communications out of Clemmons NC. I'm wondering if each company has different site numbers and that's what is accounting for the duplicate site numbers. Another thing I've noticed and verified is Site #22. It's located at the Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem. The frequency that is being used (464.775) is showing to licensed to the college. Their campus police used to be on the channel in analog mode and they now show up on this site with a talkgroup of 199. I think there are some other sites that may be licensed to other companies also. On the way to Wilmington this last weekend, I discovered a Site # 24 in the Sanford-Lillington area. It had a CC of 452.675. Looking at the FCC database, that frequency is licensed to Direct Call on their Broadway tower but I was not in the area long enough to confirm it.

Besides the aforementioned talkgroup of 199 being FTCC Police, I've found the following talkgroups.

119 appears to be a sand and gravel hauler in the Surry County and Stokes County areas
123 Wagner Appliance in Winston-Salem
386 Safety Taxi in Salisbury (they also show up using Private Call also, ids are i5415, i5417, i5419)
138, 139 and 143 appear to be Rowan County Schools (need to work on these)
478 appears to be a trash service (heard a Thomasville address)

I wanted to throw these out here so that some of you can play with it and see what you all come up with so the database can be updated.

This is interesting that FTCC is using NXDN. The coverage map that I saw does not show coverage in Fayetteville at all.

I'm pretty sure he meant Forsyth Technical Community College PD in Winston-Salem.

I'm thinking site #22 is a single frequency NXDN channel based on what I've monitored. I've managed to find a bunch of Fleet Talk frequencies that I will post later to compare to.

Regarding this part..........." I have discovered another Site # 5 that appears to be somewhere near Greensboro with a CC of 452.3375 and RAN of 5."

I can't help but wonder if this is from either one of the tall towers located off US220 between Randleman & Greensboro or from one of the towers off Battleground / Westover in Greensboro.

I've confirmed the Site #4 I mentioned, took a trip up to North Wilkesboro over the weekend. It's on Pores Knob and is licensed to Rock Communications.

I believe the Site #5 that I found is located in the Westover / Battleground area of Greensboro. I can receive it on a portable antenna inside a concrete block building at PTI Airport. I'm finding that the FCC database is not very helpful in trying to locate some of these sites.

Site 23

I also believe that Site #23 may be in the Asheboro area based on the FCC Database but I haven't confirmed it yet. I was picking it up in the Siler City area last week coming back from Wilmington.

Another Site #8

I was down in Charlotte the last 2 days and I discovered another Site #8 (different than Sauratown) while sitting at the airport down there. The CC was 451.8375. I'm not sure if it is part of the NC system or the SC system.

Just got the NXDN update for my 436HP and I can indeed confirm that there are duplicate site numbers on this system. In Northern NC, site 4 is most certainly Pores Knob, for instance.

I noticed that there are a number of missing/ unfinished sites in the DB, such as the Sauratown Mtn site and the Saulisbury site (Site 12) - I see that site 12 also seems to belong to the Whitehead site according to the DB and I should be hearing it fine, but I hear no CC on the listed frequency. However, it seems to now be using 452.4625 as the CC which is listed on the site's license. However, it is now reporting as site 1 (again, a duplicate of I site in Charlotte). Seems kind of strange. This system seems to be more complex than I at first thought. :)

I've got some info on some of the unsubmitted/unfinished sites already and will try to get some more nailed down this coming week when the system is more busy.

Anyone have any ideas on this whole duplicate site thing? Is it actually two separate systems?

Here's what some of the unfinished / unsubmitted sites "should" look like. Not all of this is confirmed yet... a lot is based off of the FCC license and the UHF LCN formula which seems to be followed on most of the sites:

Sauratown Mountain:

451.850 LCN 149 RAN 8
451.950 LCN 157 RAN 8
461.3875 LCN 512 RAN 8
462.0625 LCN 566 RAN 8
464.7875 LCN 784 RAN 8

Green Mountain Rd:

451.3625 LCN 110 RAN 9
451.5125 LCN 122 RAN 9
452.0375 LCN 164 RAN 9
452.2125 LCN 178 RAN 9
452.6625 LCN 214 RAN 9

Whitehead:

452.0125 LCN 162 RAN 1
452.4625 LCN 198 RAN 1
461.7125 LCN 538 RAN 1
463.9875 LCN 720 RAN 1
464.8875 LCN 792 RAN 1

Pores Knob:

461.4125 LCN 514 RAN 4
462.0875 LCN 568 RAN 4
463.4875 LCN 680 RAN 4

Saulisbury:

CC should be 461.4375 - Site 12 RAN 12 (Still need to work on this one)

The above is hopefully a good starting point... Like I said, I will have to see how much of it works/matches in my monitoring in the coming weeks. Running DSD+ on the site will be helpful in knowing if the frequencies are all in use and if the LCNs are correct. Updates and corrections to the above are welcomed!

Also, I have in my notes that there is possibly a site on the GMAC building in Winston-Salem? Will need to look into that as well.

The Winston Tower site (at Main & 4th St downtown) covers most of Forsyth County and a site at the former GMAC Building would be redundant. To my knowledge there are several radio towers at GMAC building but not a Fleet Talk site.

Today I confirmed the voice frequencies and LCNs used on the Green Mountain and Sauratown Mountain sites. With that info plugged into my 436, it is now receiving traffic on both sites without any difficulties. That info has been submitted to the DB as previously, only the control channel was listed for those sites.

From going thorough my day's recording files:

Judging from the traffic on the radio tech TG (TG 1), some work is being done on the system today. Not sure what exactly... I'll have to listen some more and see...

Several new unidentified TG hits:

TG 136, 137, 138, 139, 141, and 142 - All used by Rowan County School buses

Also some traffic on:

TG 358 -
TG 216 - Mentioned Rock Hill Church Rd.
TG 254 -

Anyone know who the EMS is on TG 378? It’s coming across the Winston site but the street names I caught were pretty common names, so I haven’t narrowed down a location. Dispatch is called headquarters and the units are referred to as EMS 1, EMS 5, etc...

Ok, so I have found that all of the Fire and EMS traffic from Fairfield county, SC (TG 451 and 453) are coming across the Winston-Salem, NC GMAC building site. These TGs are listed on the SC fleet talk DB page. Any idea why traffic from another state is coming across a site hundreds of miles away?

Also, the aforementioned EMS TG 378 seems to also serve SC as two of the address I was able to confirm as being in Richburg, SC (Chester County) and Lancaster (Lancaster County).

Any ideas on these?

I am very glad to see more people getting involved in tracking this system. I Have been working on this since 2014 at least! I have some useful info for everyone looking into this system. There are actually 4 systems linked. NC, SC, GA, and FL. The NC and SC systems both have the 219 system IDs. Each state (NC & SC) has it's own set of I believe 30 sites. Two of NC's site are actually in SC, 4 and 25. One of the SC sites is in NC, 15.

Due to how they are linked you will see some talkgroups carry over and all RID's will be "7". This is how you know it's linked from another system. Meaning if you are anywhere in NC and hear talkgroups with all radios having an ID of 7 then it's from one of the linked systems. There are a few in Florida and SC that regularly carry over.

The newer licenses are more accurate in where the sites are than the older ones. Rock Comm does a great job with new licenses of keeping it all accurate. But there are some older licenses from older shops that are used but may not line up exactly. So traveling to a site to confirm or using google earth to look for towers is also a fun part of the "hunt".
