I decided to devote some time to federal searching in the Charlotte area. Heard some UHF P25 fed stuff back home and the bug has bitten me. Here's what I've logged so far, feel free to add in or speculate channel name/use/agency, or just list the frequency if it's something sensitive that shouldn't be titled if it makes you sleep any better at night. Mind you, I haven't recorded voice yet, this is just logging whatever I get a lot of hits on.

162.9000 130 NAC Only 1 hit, very faint signal (repeater input?)
163.4125 123.0 PL Reported as Army Corps of Engineers repeater for W. Kerr Scott Reservoir several years ago.
165.2375 100.0 PL CBP Net 1 (listed in RRDB)
167.2875 167.9 PL FBI? (ENC 24/7)
167.5375 $167 FBI? (ENC 24/7)
167.5625 $167 FBI? (ENC 24/7)
167.5875 167.9 PL FBI? Several hits Monday 0900, possible radio check in? Unsure of ENC. No check in today however, possibly a monday only thing.

I'm curious of any links/patches between the Char/Meck system or VIPER; for all you federal gurus out there, does this ever happen?

162.9000 likely the input to ICE, search for another couple of VHF P25 channels ith NAC's +/- the $130

The 167.9 / $167 NAC do indicate and point to FBI

Are these supposed to be VIPER TGs or what system?

I have at least 6 of those TGIDs listed as another agency if it is supposed to be VIPER.

I can promise you they are not VIPER TGIDs. :D
Based on the way in which they are named I am gonna guess Char-Meck system TGIDs.

Been getting back into the federal stuff now that I'm back in Charlotte, here's some of the stuff I've noticed in the past few weeks.

162.9000 NAC 130 Unknown [Logged during Search & Store]
163.1000 NAC 167 Federal Common [ENC]
163.4125 123.0 PL Army Corps of Engineers @ W. Kerr Scott Reservoir
163.6750 67.0 PL Unknown [ENC]
163.6750 NAC 152 Unknown [Full ENC] (Hearing lots of chatter and short bursts on this 24/7)
165.2375 100.0 PL Customs Border Protection
165.2375 NAC 650 Possible BATFE (Logged short blips today, no audio, only key-ups)
167.5375 NAC 167 Confirmed FBI [Partial ENC]
167.5625 NAC 167 Confirmed FBI [Partial ENC]
167.5875 167.9 PL Possible FBI [Full ENC]
168.1250 NAC 167 Unknown (Possible Forest Service?) [Logged during Search & Store]
172.7250 051 DPL Blue Ridge Parkway Rangers (Mt. Mitchell) <- awesome coverage
172.7250 NAC 120 Blue Ridge Parkway Rangers (Mt. Mitchell) <- no motor boating!
407.7250 NAC 482 US Postal Service Inspectors (ENC)
418.7500 156.7 PL DEA-3 (Simplex)

Though a lot of these frequencies are encrypted, I've caught several in the clear at some point (You'd be surprised what you hear when surveillance ops THINK no one can hear them. Plug them in and see what you can come up with. Charlotte is a federal gold mine.

BATF Correction

Just a correction from yesterdays log, BATFE freq is actually 165.2875 not 165.2375. NAC of $650 remains the same.

Hearing some rather informal chit chat on 162.8250 NAC 293. I believe it's simplex, but of all the lists I've checked, it shows up as an input freq for CBP NET 20 & 21. I searched the VHF & UHF Fed bands during transmissions and didn't hear a repeater output. Both units were extremely garbled but I did hear mention of some recent ebay mishaps & a very upset supervisor back in the office.

Also hearing TSA Ch. 7 Rptr-1 [172.9000 NAC 001] today off and on. More than likely from KCLT.

They are CharMeck TRS talkgroups. I've kept those in a mutual aid group for years but have never heard a peep on them.

162.8250 [depending on where in the Country] is used by
CBP, BP and ICE, mostly as a Repeater input, altho a simplex user
should not be ruled out.

Got another random channel popping up here and there. 173.5875 with an NAC of 130. Looks like a popular military fire & rescue channel, but the NAC doesn't match up with the usual 293. If it is in fact mil fire, I would think it's a channel for the ANG FD at Charlotte Douglas, or maybe even possible the FD at Rowan County airport. Both fire services operate on an 800 TRS primarily, so I'm not sure if they would have their own repeater setup for routine national guard only operations. Can anyone else plug the freq in and see if they can report activity? If we narrow down where it's heard, maybe we can get a position/use figured out easier. Be aware though, it's not very active.

Is it a repeater output or could it be the input to one of the Blue Ridge Parkway repeaters along with that 162.900.

See that's what I was thinking as well, but I haven't heard enough to determine if it's sporadic use means it's an input, or just a secondary channel for local feds. Also, whoever in VA provided the sites/frequencies said he got them from a very reliable inside source, but it's not out of the question that there is something new/typo/etc. If it is BRP indeed, plug it in and keep an ear out for any activity. If anything comes across for you, it might be BRP, if not, it might be something local for me. We'll have to see. I'm curious (since the NAC matches), if 162.9000 & 173.5875 have anything in common now that you mention it. Thanks!

Just caught a break with the new 173 MHz frequency. 511 just called in reporting flight 55 just landed and reported backing over a hornets nest upon parking. Another unit said there was wasp spray out by the gate house. Looks like it will in fact be at an airport, but not completely sure which one though. My guess is Charlotte, but if so, they're using an extremely strong repeater with good coverage. RUQ & VUJ might be a little to far but isn't out of the question. Does anyone have any other ideas where the military might be set up at another airport close by?

Also, does anyone have information on the blackhawks based at Rowan County? I can't even find the unit that they're with. Internet has all sorts of contact info for the Kill Devil command post and what not, but no unit identifier is included.

173.5875 CSQ was a very common USAF crash/fire frequency back last century, Used to get a lot of surplus MOCOM 30 dash mounts on that frequency.

WA4MJF,

It looks like the trend is continuing, all my searching on Google, in the wiki, and on other random milcom pages still shows the frequency as a primary mil ARFF frequency. Most have gone digital now though, so it looks like it will continue to stay in the military band plan. Thanks for your input.
