To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Working on learning CPS2 with 6550 now, will be adding 7550e when it arrives. I have questions about UHF DMR programming and looking for a wizard to answer questions.

Thanks in advance

OK, back home and have successfully downloaded the existing code plug. This was a new radio intended for ship board use but was never put in service, but it was programmed with two zones.

My thoughts were to use the existing code plug and rewrite it as I go. To make it simple for me in the beginning I will use zone 1 for my DMR hotspot. Future zones will be for repeaters.

1. Contacts - is this where the talkgroups would be added?

2. Digital RX group list - is this where I move TG ID's to each zone?

3. Zone - Looks like this is where the RX and TX are programmed along with special features?

4. General settings - I believe this is where I add my DMR ID under radio ID and my callsign under radio alias?

5. General settings - audio profile - I see a check box for analog and digital audio leveling. I assume checking this boxes will not enable these features without the entitlements?

Anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks again in advance.

I assume you are using CPS R16?

1. Yes, under digital you can add "Group call" and if you would like, you can also add a private call to certain ID's

2. That is where you put all the TG's you would like to monitor. Each group list has a max of 16 I believe so you might have to split it up into a few group lists.

3. In the Zone you can add digital and analog channels, and then you program all of your channel information in there (TX, RX, CC, TS, contacts, etc.)

4. Radio ID, yes. Radio Alias is only something that you will see. When you power up the radio it will show the Alias. You could make it your callsign, your name, whatever.

5. If you see the boxes it means you have the entitlement. Personally I keep analog disabled and digital enabled but that's personal preference I guess.

Not sure if you are gonna be scanning or not but if you are, you need to select the scan list in the channel as well as add the channel into the scan list settings on the bottom. Once again, max for scan list is 16 channels.

Good luck!

OK, that went pretty well. I have my hotspot programmed with 8 different TG's and I see myself on the pi-star digital dashboard.

The only issue I have encountered is an annoying periodic beep from the radio, like a low battery alert on amateur handhelds. Scrolled through the radio menu but nothing jumped out as obvious. Battery is showing 61%.

any clues?

Solved the beep issue, I unchecked several boxes in the code plug that didn't directly pertain to amateur DMR and no more annoying beep. From what I see in CPS looks like FPP can be enabled, not that I would want to try programming from the front panel, tough enough with CPS.

I'll let it ride for a day or so and then start adding local repeaters and see how that goes.

There is no FPP as you imagine it. Unlocking the front panel doesn't do much except allow user to change some names and work with some button assignments. FPP in the USA is limited to Fed Gov users generally.

I can't imagine anything more frustrating than trying to program one of these from the front panel.

The Asian region firmware has full FPP, and it is quite intuitive to use. I have a zone of 16 analogue channels, and a zone of 16 digital channels for FPP. The only caveat is that you can only choose from your existing talkgroups stored in the radio.

Next step is to add repeaters.

1. I'm planning zone 2 to have several local repeaters, probably no more than 6 or 7. Additional zones would be for other areas where we travel (when we travel?). Is this logical use of zones?

2. Does the 7550e have the capability to display call signs instead of DMR number? If so, where would they be added and what type of lookup table would the 7550e recognize? I really don't want/need a global list but USA would be fine.

Zones?

I have the K8BIG repeater programmed into Zone 2 and named that zone Local.

After uploading the revised code plug I am not able to select the new zone, the 4 channels I programmed for the K8BIG repeater show up on the channel select knob under my MMDVM zone (originally zone 1).

Been through the general settings, contact list and zone programming but not finding anything that would allow me to change zones on the radio front panel.

1: yes. Zone set up is what ever you want it to be.

2: To display callsign, you would need to create private contacts, the limiting factor is that the XPR7550 only holds a total of 1000 private AND group contacts. When i was active on DMR-MARC, i didn't bother with adding all the contacts.

Buttons>Numeric Keypad>Channel in Home Zone
Very common problem with people that get new 7550's and have no idea why every channel is in the same zone.

As for your callsigns, I personally would only put the ones you really need, otherwise you are going to be spending hours typing in callsigns and probably end up maxing out your contact list.

1: yes. Zone set up is what ever you want it to be.

I"m thinking of program efficiency and making it easy to find different repeaters in different states. Right now Zone 2 is Cincinnati local but likely will add Dayton and Columbus at a later date, for sure if Xenia happens next year.

Maybe each zone should really be a state, all repeaters in one state in one zone? What say you?

If i was building a Brandmeister/DMR-MARC codeplug, I would make a zone for each repeater, and all talkgroups available for the repeater starting with international TG's first, then national, state, regional, local. I would also create a bank for DMR simplex, and a bank for analogue simplex.

My VHF XPR5550 has around 34 zones currently and covers 2 provinces(my most traveled areas)

+1 on this

Having anything more than like 30 channels per zone gets annoying having to flip through the channels. Always KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)
