To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have an NX-700 that was working just fine. It is mounted in the vehicle. However today it will not turn on. I checked the power cables, fuses, and it is getting power, in fact when I disconnect the power I can hear the speaker click so there is power to the unit. It is not set up for ignition sense and has been working fine turning on and off as it should until today. I did look at the last programming and ignition sense is not checked just to cover all of my bases. It is set up as a remote mount, and all connections are on and tight and again has been working. I brought it inside and connected to an inside 12v power source but still will not come on. Is there a fuse inside of the unit I might need to look at or any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping it is something simple. Thanks for any help and direction.

Try this first,
press and hole the MENU button, while you press the power button, if it comes up and says PROGRAM 115200, then the display is okay.
turn it back off, and power up normally, see if it comes back.

NO DISPLAY, may need to crack open the head unit form the deck, check the ribbon cable, re-seat it CAREFULLY. try the power on again.

Thanks....I have just tried that, still no change. it will not power on. I also checked the ribbon cable, it is seated in correctly on both sides. In fact I took the remote kit apart (out of line in case that was the issue), and put is back together as single unit and still nothing.

You probably blew the main fuse (Don't feel bad--I've done it twice on the x180s).

Check F401 on the main board (remove top cover, rubber gasket, and four screws). It's about center-left of the board. Check with an ohmmeter or voltmeter.

I just checked, it is 14.6. I have 2 other radios in the vehicle, an XPR-4550, and a Yaesu FTM-400. Power comes direct from battery and they are hooked up to a fused power block using anderson power pole connectors. I ran a TK-7180 in this vehicle for years and replaced it with this NX-700. None of the others have given any problems or signs of any issues.

All the other radios are still fine, so I do not think it was a spike, (but something caused it to stop functioning), unless the NX-700 was the weaker of the 3, but will look at some sort of voltage protection, as a future prevention. Thanks.....

If it's a new install that just failed, I'd probably start looking for loose connections, improperly crimped connections, etc.
I'm running 50-60 of the NX-900 (800MHz version of the 700) as well as a few NX-700's in all kinds of vehicles, police vehicles, garbage trucks, heavy equipment, etc. Never had one fail that wasn't a mechanical issue.

Thanks so much for the help and advice. When I get it back up and running, will look at doing your suggestion.

Thanks mmckenna, I have rechecked all the wiring, and hooked the unit up to my bench power supply using the same cables, wiring, that were in the truck, all cables check good with a meter. Hooked this power cord to my NX-800 and it fired right up. Then I installed another radio to the same outlet on the power block in the vehicle and it is working. All fuses are good. The 700 just seems dead. I am still waiting on the company to get back to me, hoping they will step up and work with me on this.

I do appreciate everyone's help and guidance. Love my Kenwoods, got a TK-7180 in my Jeep, and a NX-800 here as a base and a NX-300 HT. Next step is checking the main fuse on the board as suggested above, (will let my friend do that as my eyes are old and hands with arthritis will not let me do delicate work), plus if the company will work on fixing or replacing this I do not want to do anything they might say I did that caused it to fail, if that makes sense. Hopefully they will get back to me tomorrow as with the time now this evening I feel that have closed.

OK, good troubleshooting steps.

As was said above, Fuse 401 would be the place to start looking. +12vdc feeds the B+ supply off the power input. F-401 splits power off from there for various controls, 8 volt and 3.3 volt supplies. That might explain the display going. But figuring out why it opened might be harder.

Wanted to update that the company is going to take it back and either fix it or replace it. So things are looking up. Thanks again to everyone for their help. This is a great site.
