The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Never hear anyone on 19

That is amazing. That place was usually humming with activity what with the free casino shuttle and all (they still have that?) Truckers coordinating group trips to the Strip, etc. Always a guy there with a linear amp that goes by the handle Humbucker, and you can copy him all the way to Pahrump. There was a time when he was 'at war' with another CBer that used a linear named Handy Manny, who advertised and gave directions (and offered shuttle service) to one of the legal brothels in Nye county. Very interesting and entertaining conversations there, to say the least, on any night. To hear that the Vegas TA is dead for CB radio is unbelievable to me.

Are you sure your radio was turned on? (j/k)

Still handy to have a cb even of everyone has gone to cell apps.

It is hit and miss and varies on it due to technology, along with newer younger drivers into cells and other types of communication. Isn't like the old days.

Some places you'd not hear a peep over month others it's busy.

I was thinking about pulling the CB out of my pickup, as I hadn't picked up a whole lot of interesting or useful traffic since moving here...and then we had our first slippery morning of the fall, and I was able to listen in to lots of traffic about where the roads were particularly slick.

I'm 40 miles north of Toronto , Canada and there is rarely chatter on 19 here . I always monitor 19 . My radio hasn't picked up wx 162.400 for the past couple days ! Very odd !
Yet its online streaming .
Surely they didnt stop transmitting the signal for radio reception .
Odd !!

Yesterday, a conversation I overheard on channel 19 let me know that a US highway I planned to turn on to begin a 200-mile trip was now closed to clean up tornado damage from early that morning, so I simply took an alternate route and lost no time at all.

I thanked the driver for the information and went on my way.

Yes, the CB is still used and useful.

I have driven from the mountains to ocean in North Carolina without hearing a thing on channel 19. The strange thing is that every truck I see has a CB antenna.
Once I used my Midland 75-822 in the car. I put it in scan mode just to see if someone was using any other channels. It kept stopping on the skip on 6 and 11, but nothing else.
At home with a long wire, I hear skip on channel 6 and 11 every night, but nothing on the other channels.
I live a few miles off of Hwy 421 near Wilkesboro and I rarely hear any truckers on channel 19. Heck, I rarely hear any chatter on any of the 40 channels anymore. I got started in CB back in the mid sixties in Charlotte and back then, there were very few people on the air.because very few people had radios back then. Seems like CB has reverted back to those days. I am thinking of getting my tech license for 2 meter radio but even with having a hand held unit already, there is not much of that going on in this area inspite of there being several repeaters in this area. I will keep trying the CB frequencies anyway. I hear the skip on 6, 11 and 16 some myself with a 4 foot Firestik antenna. I have a long wire antenna somewhere in storage, I wish I could find it.

I love the Firestik antennas, they do a good job and the red ones mounted to my mirrors looked slick on my red Crete truck lol

Don't let the quiet 2m repeaters in your area disappoint you enough that you do not acquire your tech ticket. Lots of repeaters remain quiet during the day but get busy later with nets and roundtables. There's so much more than 2m to check out with a tech license. Explore!

The Marion repeater is fairly active and with a good set up you should be able to work it from Wilkesboro, there's also a DMR repeater in Wilkesboro and you can talk all over the world on that. Some CBer's got their license and moved to 10m SSB, I hear some down in Rutherford County so you might find some activity there

I am actually in MIllers Creek. There is a repeater here somewhere and the local HAM club (FARC) has one just a little farther out.

I wish I knew more about SSB. I have a Realistic TRC-465 mobile CB with SSB but I have never used the SSB on it. I am confused about all of this 10m and 11m stuff at this point and looking for information that will spell it out for me in simple terms.

I am getting into DXing a bit and I just bought a Realistic DX-392 that had been professionally refurbished and modded. I need a better outdoor antenna for it though. I am retired and this kind of stuff is a hobby I have not dabbled in for years. Its something that I have always been interested in though.

I am planning to take a class in January towards getting my Tech license and I bought a cheap Baofeng BF-F9 V2 HT a short while back to play with. I use it to listen to local Amateur chatter and I programmed in a few local public service frequencies as well. I did turn off the transmit functions until I get my "Ticket" as they say. So, as you can see, I have many irons in the fire as they say.

.

11 meters (CB) runs from 26.965-27.405 Mhz, 10 meters is 28.00-29.700 Mhz. Technician class licensees have SSB voice privileges from 28.300-28.500. Those bands are not open much right now so the only SSB activity you are likely to hear would be local. With your DX392 tune around the 14 Mhz range USB and you should hear plenty

Thank you very much for that very informative explanation of the two bands. I will certainly give those frequencies a listen to. May I ask what county you reside in? I used to live in Haywood County but I now live in Wilkes County. Still near the mountains but I miss the Smokies real bad. All except for the longer winters and the snow.

I am about 1/2 between where you were and where you are now(if you take the I40,NC18 route) in McDowell County

I am very familiar to NC18. I use that route every time I travel between Haywood and Wilkes County. So that would put you in either Marion, Morganton or Lenoir but I won't ask any more questions as I respect your privacy. I like the area of NC18 between Lenoir and NC16, Some beautiful country there and a pleasant drive as well. I checked the 14 mHz band and did not find anything happening at that time. I will check it again at different times though. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Near Marion

That is a nice area too. I used to live about 25 miles north of Waynesville until almost three years ago. My wife inherited property here and so we are here now. We still own the other property but hope to sell it soon. We cant keep both up at the same time. My son lives there part time and keeps up the place for us. I do miss the peace and quiet though. Here is a link to a YouTube videos I made back in March with footage from my drone. The first one is where I used to live and the second is of the noisy busy place I live now.

And here is a video of where I am now.

It's Alive!!

Wow! Just had a chat with a fellow on channel 18 that is 16 miles away. Still nothing much on 19 though. Just some occasional trucker passing through on Hwy 421. Channel 18 was sporadically active for a while after my chat. At least there is somebody out there.

I guess it just depends on time of day and location. In the last few days what I have heard:

Chan. 1 Flaggers on a road construction site
Chan 6 DX from the Caribbean
Chan 18 Husband and wife talking
Chan 19 Truckers, Logging operation
Chan 35 Ragchew

Yep! It really depends on where you are! Things do seem to be picking up however, and I think that all the CB radio groups on Facebook could have something to do with it.

I for one would like to see it's popularity gain some momentum myself. As a retiree, I would like to be able to sit by my radio with a cup of coffee and chat with some new friends. I am thinking of getting my technicians license but the local HAMs don't seem to care so much for a ragchew these days. I got that information from a local Amateur club member recently. Even the ones I catch on my HT are only on in the mornings for just a little while. CB would be a whole lot more fun for me as I see it. No so formal. I do have SSB capabilities too.
