• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I was in a Walmart today and saw the above radios sitting on the shelf. What attracted my attention was they said 40 channels when the FRS/GMRS is 22 channels. The radios offer the standard 121 privacy codes. The question is the extra 18 channels. I read the information from Cobras site and they state that the extra 18 channels are preprogrammed/user programmable channels. My question is does anyone know the 18 preprogrammed frequencies? A second question is how does the user enter their frequencies.

Still just 22 frequencies to choose from.

40 channel slots in the radios just means you can program the 22 channels in with different squelch codes up to 40 different ways.

It's a marketing scam. People used to buy these radios based on outlandish range claims (Up to ## miles….), then they started adding more "channels" knowing that consumers wouldn't know the difference between available frequencies and available channel slots.

These have been on the market for a while.

Thank you everyone. I agree very deceptive. Noone in industry ever believed the outlandish range claims. This is a whole new level of a deliberate attempt to make a false claim while sounding legit. Basically it is a 22 channel radio with 18 extra memory locations added in.

I can see many consumers falling for this. I was not going to purchase the units myself. This is a perfect example of doing your own due diligence on any purchase.

My personal take on this.... I am very disappointed in Uniden. Their web page is deliberately unclear on what the 40 channels are. Uniden you can do better. To all manufacturers once you get a reputation for 'ripping' off customers you can never erase it. Case in point I have several 536 scanners. When bought the band scope option was mentioned, never was available. Now there is this second clear instance. Rest assured from now on anything from Uniden will be toughly researched before purchase or recommendation. In an attempt to make a '$50' sale you have annoyed a long term and well connected customer.

On the plus side. RR and the membership again show why this is one of, if not the best of the goto sites for information on RF equipment and use.

Back in the glory days of 27 MHz CB, I recall Midland advertising at least one radio with "7 watts of power!"
And in small print it said something like "audio power". A friend liked to use the term specsmanship to describe such things. Effective sales tool to deceive the uninformed masses.
