New Alinco DX-70TH problem..

This one has me freakin baffled. Got ahold of an SWR meter and I had it testing with the radio. Well, the radio had alot of reflected power despite the antenna being tuned for the freq, and put out abotu 10w power instead of 100... About the third or fourth keyup test, it made a pop sound, and cut off. Now when I try to power it on, it either just clicks and doesn't turn on, or it turns on for a few seconds and cuts off. In-line fuse isn't blown either, yet it doesn't seem it's totally dead since I got it to turn on.. What's going on?

Sounds like the extremely high reverse SWR smoked the final power amplifier protection circuitry. Send it to the shop.

Ah fun... Well that's where it was ognna be goin anyway, so.

Might not be too bad of a repair, protection diodes and a transistor or two in the foldback circuit. It's the labor that can add up. What do you think of the receiver section??

Receiver is FANTASTIC. It turns on now and stays on. I did a couple keyups, and I get about a 1.5 to 1.8 SWR rating on my dual needle one, though it's only showing output at around 10 forward output on the MFJ HF/144/440 MHz SWR meter.

I am not sure but i don't think you can use a chicken band s.w.r. meter for ham radio.

No idea what a 'chicken band swr meter' is... But this is one specifically for HAM radio... Model# MFD-864, specifically for 30w/300w ranges fo '440 mhz' '144mhz' and '1.8-60'

chicken band is a derogatory term for CB.

Sounds like your swr meter is adequate.

If this is new and under warranty i would send it back. on the other hand i would open it up and look for a capacitor or what is left of it. the pop sounds like a cap shorted and the fact that it now works again leads me to think once open from the pop sound this could be the problem. i wouldn't turn it upside down so you don't get what's left on the part all over the mother board. just my thought's.

Eh no it's not under warranty, made back in 2000. I checked, I don't see any caps that look blown, huh... I'll just send it to Triad Electronics Supply in Winston at some point.

Does it smell burned? you would think if something let go there would be pieces ln there.

Well maybe then you should send it in if it doesn't work.
