Hi Guys. I am in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

I have a Uniden UBC73XLT. I am wondering if a new antenna will assist me to pick up more frequncies that are further away. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be compatible with this model.

Thanks heaps. I appreciate any feedback

Most radios are compatible with just about anything, though some handheld models can be a little too sensitive when trying some external antennas. I personally don't have any experience with this model though. The kind of antenna you want, depends on what frequencies you listen to most. You should focus on the frequencies you're most interested in and/or the ones that come in the weakest... and get something designed for those. Anything that comes in strong, will typically come in on any antenna, so those will still be covered. But any antenna mounted externally, will always do better than one of the rubber ones.

Also I have been looking at Diamond RH519 and Diamond RH771. Does anyone have any opinions on these?

I have the Diamond RH519, for its size it picks up signals nice. Plus it's slim so it won't break if it bends.

Now I couldn't find any Diamond antenna called the RH771, did you type it correctly?

I believe the RH771 is just an import version of the classic RH77CA antenna. A lot of the RH77 lookalike antennas made in Asia also come labeled as RH771's.

I have the 519 and it's a great antenna for the size. I also have the RH77. It's also a great antenna, and you can't beat it for the price. The only downside to the RH77 is it's size and weight, and it's not stellar on 800MHz.

The 771 (aka 77CA) like JustLou mentions are basically the same and would be a fine improvement over the stock antenna.

While it is a good antenna, just be realistic about your expectations, but as a first start, almost a no-brainer. Your scanner doesn't do 800mhz, so no worries there.

As for expectations, put it this way: it will improve upon stations that are scratchy and barely monitorable, and for some that you are not hearing now, they will be made just barely monitorable. You may need much more, but at least this a common start.
