Maybe I just haven't noticed it before, but there was one of the new all white cruisers near me today... There was the two regular antennas on the roof and trunk, but there was also a pretty thick yellow antenna, possibly helical, about 5' long mounted to the rear right side. Is that for voice? I don't recall seeing that before.

It's probably GPS. Does CHP use AVL???
We have those same pucks on our engines for the AVL/GPS stuff.

The CHP in my area don't really have Mobile Data Terminals, but have a laptop PC mounted to a rack near the center console. An officer I was talking with in the rest area I supervise told me that they used a cell phone to link it to the Internet. Could this be the puck shaped antenna you observed?

It's a new gps unit they are installing that ties in with the MDC (Mobile Digital Computer), which is the laptop in the center console. When they log in it connects to the dispatch center for calls and such and there's a gps button on the MDC program to activate it. It connects to the dispatch center through the digital modem in the trunk, not the internet.
