I see that recently a new TG has been added to the NJTPA's P25 TRS. TG 52 "Toll Collection". This interests me because I worked for the NJTPA Tolls Department for over 30 years (retired) and we never had a radio channel of our own. The Tolls Offices hadn't used radio communications since the 1990's, and department vehicles were tuned to Northern Division to contact Operations if needed. Has anyone actually heard anything on this TG? I have it programmed in and have yet to hear anything.

Yep, I was the one that submitted the talkgroup to the database. I heard some activity/chatter about a toll collector emergency panic button that was pushed, and that a trooper was enroute to Interchange 11 a few months ago. I talked with my contact, and he told me that they added a talkgroup to the Toll Booths on both the TP and the GSP when the new system came on-line, but that it was recently activated. While I'm unaware of the actual talkgroup designator name, that's what it's used for.

As a side note, I was also told that there are other talkgroups for both the Garden State Parkway and the NJ Turnpike that are designated "Fleetwide," but I have yet to identify them. A number of my contacts have retired as well from the NJTA, and aside from the occasional run-in with the one I get my info from, it's gonna be tough for me to ID everything accurately for database submission. There is also a TG (46?) for the Trades - Electrical division, but because I don't have a positive ID on it, I can't submit it to the database for inclusion, per RR policy. I have also heard activity on TG 47 as well, but have not been able to ID that one as well.

Interesting.... I was still there when they changed from the 217MHz LTR Passport System to the current P25 TRS. The Toll booths themselves haven't had radio communications since the Turnpike abandoned their VHF repeater system probably almost 20 years ago. The toll booths have a panic button and phone line that connects to Operations in Woodbridge via the Turnpike's fiber optic network, and an intercom that communicates with the Toll Plaza Supervisor office. I just made a call to my friend who still manages toll plazas in the Northern Division and he knows nothing it. I'll have to stop by my old office one day and see if I can find out anything else.

I'm gonna program ID's 46 and 47 into one of my radios. If I hear anything that I can identify I'll post it here. It would make a lot of sense if the gave Trades (Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, etc) their own TG instead of using the Northern Division TG.

In contrast to the Turnpike, on the Garden State Parkway (under the New Jersey Highway Authority) in the 70's toll collectors were frequently heard on the 154.905 frequency used also for NJSP Troop E dispatch as well as authorized tow trucks. Toll collectors would call in accident reports and other incidents reported by motorists as well as toll violators. Small exit and entrance plaza collectors would call in and out of service "Paramus North to Parkway, Signal 22". During the overnight hours "Parkway" dispatch would poll each plaza hourly to confirm things were ok.

I have a Turnpike radio relic from the 1970's. A Motorola MT500 from the Tolls department. I saved this from the trash, restored it, and used it to monitor the VHF system in the 90's. These were mainly used by supervision to acknowledge general broadcasts from Operations.

This morning I heard someone testing new HH radios on TG 46. This is the first activity I've noticed on TG 46.
