The January 11, 2015 reorganization of the Los Angeles Fire Department's Emergency Services Bureau will NOT cause any immediate change to the LAFD radio channel communication plan. Future communication enhancements though, are being developed.

The reorganization has led to some changes in LAFD Command (not Fire Station or Battalion Chief responder) Designations and Radio Identifiers.

Each new LAFD Bureau will operate with specific radio designations and identifiers. Each of the four Bureaus will have a common prefix convention for Command staff.

- LAFD Headquarters staff will have radio identifiers below 20 (e.g. "Command 5")

TIP: The following numerical progression is in alphabetical order by Bureau name...

- Operations Central Bureau will maintain a 2x convention (e.g "Command 21", "Training Officer 24" or "EMS Officer 25")

- Operations South Bureau will maintain a 3x convention (e.g "Command 31", "Training Officer 34" or "EMS Officer 35")

- Operations Valley Bureau will maintain a 4x convention (e.g "Command 41", "Training Officer 44" or "EMS Officer 45")

- Operations West Bureau will maintain a 5x convention (e.g "Command 51", "Training Officer 54" or "EMS Officer 55")

The LAFD radio terms “North Division”, “North Division EMS”, “South Division”, and “South Division EMS” will no longer be used. The LAFD Supply and Maintenance Division will coordinate the application of new apparatus identification lettering as soon as is practical.

We appreciate your interest in these and other changes at our agency. We'll post a more detailed yet cogent radio identification roster in the weeks to come, as the LAFD reorganization plan moves forward. We know you have many questions, and appreciate your patience.

I've attached a very rough map that overlays the new LAFD Bureaus with those of the Police Department. Better graphics and information formatting will be forthcoming.

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,
