I live in Macomb County (21 Mile and Romeo Plank) and I was wondering if the Uniden 996T would be a good radio to purchase to monitor the Macomb County Sheriff Dept. and military airband frequencies? Is the speaker on the 996T on the top or the bottom of the unit?

I would wait just a little while. Macomb County just went digital (APCO-25) a couple days ago. It's a simulcast system similar to the configuration in Detroit. When Detroit first did this, both Radio Shack (GRE), and Uniden scanners were having difficulties receiving it clearly. Detroit's problems have been pretty well overcome, yet it seems Macomb Counties simulcast system has stirred up problems again (for some). At the moment, Radio Shack's PRO-96, and PRO-2096 seem to cope with it better than the Uniden scanners. But that could change with another firmware upgrade from Uniden, or some possible system tweaks on the MC system.

I'm down the street from you, 25 Mile and Romeo Plank Rd. I have both the BCD996T, and the PRO-2096. For the moment, the PRO-2096 wins hands down for Macomb County!

For MilAir, Uniden would be the best choice.
