Heya all,

I'm moving to Grand Junction in a couple weeks, and I'm going to be there for six months. I've looked on the database, but I wanted to get some insight from people around there regularly.

Anything to know/do/listen to?

Trying not to clutter my scanner with useless frequencies.

Almost everything is on the state P25 system so a look at State of Colorado DTRS Trunking System, Statewide, Multi-State
sorted by county and in particular Mesa County.
There is still a very small amount of VHF in the county but aside from the rural deputies and a couple of rural fire departments that use it when outside of the Digital Trunked Radio System (DTRS) is very seldom live.

Setting up the scanner for P25 in open mode and locking out the talk-groups that you are not interested in is the probably most efficient. However a look at the map and a browse through the page referenced above will provide the talk-groups you might be interested in.

And listening to Mesa County and Grand Junction Police, Fire and EMS Live Audio Feed
will give you a preview of what you are coming into.

Are any of the federal wildfire agencies like the FS, BLM or NPS active on their frequencies around there?

The BLM has a fire center at the airport and will give twice daily weather and fire condition updates. Some trail crews and work parties will check in with the dispatch but it is pretty quiet. The USFS dispatch is in Delta with a few of the field workers checking in on their repeaters.
The only NPS in the area are the Colorado National Monument and they still maintain a VHF repeater on the Grand Mesa however 99 percent of their traffic is on the state DTRS system the rangers are dispatched on the SO talkgroup and other activities are on the "tactical NPS" talkgroup.
You can hear the USFS rangers checking in with Montrose dispatch on the CSP 4A, 5A, and 4C talkgroups.
When a fire occurs in the area and fire crews are brought in they will very quickly go to the NIFC temporary fire repeaters and simplex operations.

This is an old list but as far as I know it is probably still pretty accurate:

Some good Wiki resources are at (many do need updates and OTA Validations)
