Does anyone familiar with Licking County know why NFD units always announce when they're approaching the 21st/Granville intersection when on fire runs? They don't do it for any other intersection and I'm pretty sure they only do it on fire runs, and not on EMS runs.

Back in the 70's in another State the fire departments did it to warn other fire apparatus so they would not crash into each other. Now the safe way is to stop at all reds and stop signs, and slow down as approaching intersections if you have the green.

That would be the reason I can think of...

That's interesting, I never noticed until you pointed that out. Do you live in Newark? Is there something "special" at 21st and Granville?

Could be a common intersection that multiple stations have to pass through while responding to a call.

Could be. I believe Newark has 4 stations and Newark isn't exactly a large town, so it could be for collision avoidance.

When going to the north end, Station #1 units travel west on Granville road. Station #3 travels north on 21st. They all approach the intersection near the same time. The intersection has three houses that sit close to the road making it hard to see approaching traffic beside the fact the intersection is very tight and congested during evening hours. Sometimes you will hear engine #4 who gets off of 16 at 21st. announce there exit for the same reasons.

I don't think they want to repeat history.

Thanks, everyone. Is it a new thing since the accident? I thought I had heard it before then too, but I might be wrong.
