New guy that doesn’t understand anything just yet. I live in Kentucky and want to listen to the state police but know they use NAC. I’m not sure what devices I would be able to get to listen or even what I would have to do when I did get the equipment. The only thing I think I know right now is there’s something called NAC which I assume is some sort of encryption

Welcome to the RR forums. Per the RRDB, the KSP are UHF P25 conventional with no encryption. Any scanner listed in the wiki linked here should work to bring them in

Please keep in mind, they are moving to a P25 Phase 2 trunked system in the near future, that is currently in the testing phase and already in the RR database HERE. Before you buy a scanner that works on the UHF state police system that may be outdated soon you should consider a scanner for future changes.

You only need to enter a NAC if there are other agencies using the same freq. Your agency may be the only one on that freq in your listening area. Enter the freq into a digital scanner without the NAC.

Could be more than a year until they make the migration according to this thread...

Yes sir, you gave good advice, but would you want to spend $300-400 today to have to spend another $400-500 next year? If you know they are moving in that direction, just spend a little more today rather than a lot more next year. By the way, tomorrow is next year :) Just sayin.
