If I am reading this correctly, Mount Clements is contracting police services from the County Sheriff Department and Mount Clement is paying the sheiff department for these services? How many Officers did the Mount Clements Police Department have before they shut down?

I live in Cass County just north of the Berrien County/Cass County line. Both Sheriff's Department are contracting their services to Villages and Townships in their county, but I don't know of any big departments being disbanded in this area and services contracted out to the sheriff's department.

Niles Township has a millege vote set for August, if millege passes, they keep their Police Department, if millege fails, Niles Township will contract out for police services from either the Berrien County Sheriff Department or the Niles City Police Department. Many people think a deal has already been made with the Sheriff for the Sheriff Department to do the partols.

Earlier in this year, when Niles Township bought new squard cars they change the brand and colors of the squard cars to the same ones as the Berrien County Sheriff Department has.

Also the Sheriff says he Had mad a contract proposal to Niles Township to patrol their area, if the millege fail.

The City Manager of Niles says he has had some discussions with Niles Township but has made no proposals to them for a contract.

Mount Clemens government chose not to raise property taxes, or to levy a city income tax to keep the police force.

So far, there has been an increase in enforcement actions by the Sheriff... or so it seems. there have been more traffic stops, the number of deputies at large city events has increased, and the evidence of "working girls and drugs" in one area of the city had decreased.

All these things are a good thing!! But did the Sheriff do it??

For those that do not know, there was a police chief here that was in a constant fight with officers over a variety of topics and ended up being fired http://macombdaily.com/stories/090804/loc_mcpox001.shtml

Now, did the lack of action come from this?? or did the increase come from the Sheriff??? I dont know..

But I DO know that the Sheriff is doing pretty good... and has the manpower and the support of his deputies to make the chenges that were needed... and is saving the city about 1 million dollars

Sorry, got on a tangent there...

Officers.. they said we had 26.. including command. we now have 17 including command... with quite a large reserve.
