Well, I am going to shoot up to Ham Radio Outlet later and grab myself a Larsen 150/450/800 Antenna, but won't be drilling the car, so I need an NMO Mag Mount in order to attach it to the car. I was looking at this site - http://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=264 - and there are different NMO Mag Mount options (hoping Ham Radio Outlet will have some so I can play with my new toy today). Is one better than the other, a bigger base more preferable over a smaller one? Just curious to see if there are differences and see if it does matter what I choose.

Also, just throwing it out there but on that website listed above, they also have the Trunk Lip Mounts as a way to mount an NMO mount. Are these better than a mag mount or are they not worth pursuing?

Thanks

I would suggest the NMO trunk lip mount from that page. Get the mount in black to match the antenna. Laird technologies makes a black one if they do not have it there. I use this setup and it works great on VHF and UHF, could be better on 850MHz but its acceptable for now.

I use the Larson Mag Mount with that antenna...works great. They also have lip mounts, HRO should have both. The exact model I have is NMO-MMR by Larsen.

I have recently switched from the PMM3B.... have been using the Larsen 150/450/850 with Black Spring on a 3.5 inch NMO Mag Mount all for less than 75 bucks... miss the little hershey (haven't tried the Workmann yet), but am really happy with the Larsen...

That is what I am switching from as well Moving the PMM3B some place else and going to go with the Larsen.

That site you listed, I don't see anywhere to purchase anything (assume you can't do that) and that spring, where does that go?

Sorry about that.... I forgot to post the index link to Cheapham.com. Scroll down to Larsen, about halfway down the page, and they are all there... The spring screws onto magmount, then the antenna slides into the top of the spring, secured with a hex nut.... The spring adds about four inches to the total height of the antenna assembly but has already saved this antenna from loss in low hanging tree branches....

Oh wow thanks for pointing that out. I like that a lot and should definitely come in handy.

I presume you mean between the NMO mount and the antenna rod don't you? The spring doesn't attach directly to the mag mount itself...does it?

But in any event....how does it hold up to wind...does the antenna rock back when you're on the highway?

Unscrew the existing nipple, screw the spring on in it's place and slide the antenna rod into the hole at the top, tighten the hex and it is ready to go.... the antenna flexes in a strong wind but it has held tightly. A better than posted speeds driving in the center lane between two 18 Wheelers it has flexed and wiggled, but has held tight..... the low hanging branches had me worries, but it stuck like a bug on a windshield.
