Been using the above scanner on windows 10 Pro, with no problems for the last 2 years. My Hard Drive went a few weeks ago, so I replaced it. Now when I try to reinstall the driver I keep getting the following error:
((((Unknown USB Device(Device Descriptor Request Failed)))).. Can someone please tell me what I need to do, so I can connect the scanner back up to my computer..

I have sent two messages to Uniden support (((twice))). They keep telling me to get the driver....I'm a Technology Manager at a Collage... I have the correct driver and know how to install it..

The problem is the above and below ERROR.
Unknown USB Device(Device Descriptor Request Failed

I notice also that the error appears under the USB Controller area, and not in the Port area in the Device Manger.

Also, I did go to Uniden and downloaded another driver installed it, but get the same error message.

Upman if you read this can you or some one please help me

Thank you very much

It's definitely a driver problem. The error message indicates the computer is not correctly identifying the USB device as a scanner. Check to see if the computer is actually trying to use the Uniden driver, as opposed to a generic Microsoft driver.

Did you Google "Unknown USB Device(Device Descriptor Request Failed)"? I would start there. I see a lot of folks were able to solve this problem.

Your perception is the problem is with Uniden. Perhaps because they distribute the drivers but it's actually a Microsoft issue. I would double and triple check you have the correct driver installed.

Before you worry about the Uniden driver issue, make 100% sure the proper and latest updated driver for the the USB hardware on the computer is installed. A very common problem after hard drive replacement is Windows Plug & Pray drivers may no be correct and/or up to date. Often you need to go directly to the computer manufacturers support web site to obtain and install the proper drivers. Sometimes you need to uninstall the computers USB drivers and then scan for new hardware changes and allow the drivers to be reinstalled again.

Get a working USB flash drive and make sure this properly works with the computer as well before you move on to worrying about the Uniden driver.

What make and model computer are you dealing with?

Thank your sir for your reply. I tried the software that you recommend, but still had no luck. In fact I did try it three time as recommended.

I also tried setting up my scanner on two other computers, one with Windows 10 the other Windows 7. All three computers give me the same error. This was why I contacted Uniden in the first place. I believe either the cable is bad or the USB plug. I plan on ordering a new cable tomorrow.

The rest of you that left me a positive reply. Thank you guys also. I did try each of you recommendations.

May you all have a bless New Year

Rick,

If I missed something in skimming the previous posts in this thread, I apologize in advance. Similarly, you may have already tried what I'm suggesting, but if not, give it a shot.

Your scanner, as you've noted, is the BCD996P2. While you are using a USB cable to try and connect it to the PC, the actual driver you need is the serial driver that Uniden posted. If you have already tried this driver (especially on your Windows 7 machine), then you're like back to either a scanner defect or bad cable. Neither, of course, is impossible. Since you've tried more than one PC, you have almost certainly ruled out a bad USB port on a PC.

The PL2303 driver mentioned earlier in this thread is not the one you'd need. The serial driver is needed. If that is the one you downloaded from Uniden and installed without resolution, then hopefully a replacement cable will do the trick. I've ordered extra cables from Amazon for my various scanners, and all have worked with no issues.

The cable is a common USB mini. You probably have several others laying about. The only thing special about it is that it has an RF choke on it to help reduce conducted RF interference from the USB cable, which won't matter for diagnostic purposes.

I did try other cables. So I guess it must be the port?
Thanks you for your reply

Sounds like you need a manufacturer-specific driver for your USB controller. No idea what kind of computer you are working with, but Toshiba laptops are notorious for requiring custom drivers, and nothing in the Windows update library will ever work right.

Thank you Sir
I at first through the samething, but after trying 2 other computers and 2 different cables, and still getting the same error. I believe it's the sub port on the radio.

My computer is a home build with a 6 core AMD chip. the radio did work on it before the hard drive crashed..

This was why I was asking and trying all recommendations before sending the radio back.

Thank you again for your input.

....I'm a Technology Manager at a Collage...

lol..

Did you do a Windows re-install when you swapped out the hard drive? OR was it a secondary hard drive (no operating system installed on it). Also, did you completely uninstall all drivers, reboot the machine, and attempt to install again?

Re-read Post #7 above. Can you use ANY other USB device on the specific port on the computer??? USB flash drive, USB hard drive, USB mouse??

Have you gong into the device managed and uninstalled all the USB drivers for the computer, run a scan for new hardware and allowed the USB drivers to reinstall??

What caused the hard drive to die? Electrical surge or dropouts? Was the scanner connected to the computer at the time?

The 996P2 also has a serial port on the rear that can do most things the USB port on the front can do.

But you are using the USB driver from this TWiki page located about 1/2 way down?

http://info.uniden.com/twiki/bin/view/UnidenMan4/BCD996P2

It really is called "Plug & Pray" for a reason!

I think you can stop trying to diagnose this, now. The OP has added that he has tried using multiple USB cables on multiple computers (information that was not originally provided). This points more toward some kind of failure on the scanner, itself.
