• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Noise in radio

I still have that Firefly antenna installed as my Larsen is still crossing the county on it way to me. One thing I have noticed in using my Bill 3 is the noise when on coming traffic passes me. Not every vehicle does it but quit a few do. I am thinking this is still the function of a bad antenna. If not I would like to fix it before my new one arrives.

Might be RF interference. Used to be that the old ignition systems were really noisy and caused a lot of interference to radios. Radio Shack used to have a page pretty much dedicated to mobile interference reduction.

Now, it can be cheap USB chargers, they are notoriously bad RF noise generators.
Cheap LED lights are another.

If it's only occasional, it's probably not your setup.

I have tried a few things but didn't notice much difference. I did go from a known ground under the hood to the antenna mount with just automotive wire while I am waiting for some ground straps to come in. I think that might have helped a little. My set up is working and getting out but not as it should, I don't think. I am 6 miles from the e-way and don't hardly hear anything. Part of it may be the swr but I have a cheap o meter to check it with that I don't have much faith in. My NANO_VNA came in today but now I am waiting for the adapter.

Antenna system picks up most of the noise.

— Adjust NRC on RX to help. (#3 or so)
— Adjust RF Gain to when “quiet” first starts on other than 19. (Quarter turn or less)
— Use SQ to modify.

Have to get used to local environment plus local operators (not Skip) get the above “right”.

Need DRX-901 speaker.

Remove coax from radio, turn it up (don’t TX) and listen for vehicle noise sources driving around.

I do use the NRC on RX and TX. The default position on them is #3. I have mine set on #5. More is better, is it not?

Yes and No.

Past changes vehicle to vehicle, and past differences metro to metro (or state to state), while 5 is “quiet” it also sorta distorts voice.

DRX-901 speaker is that which I strongly recommend. How a man says something is as important as what he says.

— Under stress, many don’t find words and try to adapt incorrect choices via modifications.

It isn’t that 5 is wrong, it’s that 3 serves well (right external speaker) to get best of enunciation, pronunciation, cadence, etc, against background noise.

Experiment as you go along.
