Hey, I'm new to this kinda thing. Wanted to get a scanner setup for my grandmother. Will I need to get a digital scanner or will an old school UHF/VHF work?

If you are in the Shoals Area, pretty much all public safety agencies remain analog. Old School works well!

The only exception I can think of at the moment is Franklin County Fire Net. Call pages go out analog; rest is digital.

If you are in the Hunstville area, just about everything there is on AFRN which is P25 digital trunking. Limestone is still on conventional.

Isn't a scanner useless in Huntsville/Madison as everything is encrypted?

Huntsville PD dispatch is clear .
Huntsville fire is clear .
I think the so dispatch is clear .
Hemsi is clear .
Not sure if Madison is clear.
County fire is encrypted. That is a joke.

Pretty sure the only full encrypted stuff is the county FD and Madison PD. A lot of TAC stuff is encrypted for some of the other agencies, but dispatch is in the clear.

I was down there a few months ago, and there was plenty to listen to on AFRN.
