NorthCom San Diego Question

I have a HomePatrol-2. I am new to scanning. I set the scanner to only pick up NorthCom channels and yet if I compare my portable unit to listening online at

I find that I am missing many transmissions. I have the squelch set to minimum and distance set to maximum and all the fire service types selected.

Does this just mean that I need a better antenna or is there something I am missing to pick up all Northcom communications?

I am in Del Mar and I hear online transmissions for Solana Beach and yet they are not picked up on MY scanner.

Welcome to scanning.. Sounds like you imported the whole NextGen RCS system. What is probably happening is your scanner is cycling through each of the sites in the system -- the system covers all of the way out to imperial county -- you won't here those sites. Since you are new, you may want to listen to a podcast about scanners, Podcasts Archives - Scanner School Sessions 129 and 130 will teach you a lot about what you question.

But, you only need to listen to the West Simulcast since you are in Delmar.

Ditto what cellbaseman said...PERMANENT AVOID all sites except the WEST site.
