At those prices, I would just get a used cellular antenna which will work as well if not better.

Do you have a specific reason to limit the band of the antenna? If not, I'd suggest a multi-band antenna.

I would steer away from an active antenna. Another stage of RF amplification just sets you up for desense or overload from near by signals sources. There is an old saying, Signal comes and signal goes but noise accumulates. A good antenna is better than added active device any day.

I am wondering which antenna I should get for my BCD536HP I have narrowed it down to these 2 any help would be appreciated because I have no ideal which one to get.

Indoor]Indoor 762-894 MHz 5dB Gain Omni Antenna w/Desk Stand 762-894 MHz 5dB Gain Omni Antenna w/Desk Stand

or
WAN-97A]WAN-97A Active Nomad Base Antenna Active Nomad Base Antenna

We need more information in order to be helpful. What are you trying to recieve? Or more specifically, what frequencies are you trying to receive? I assume you've tried the antenna that came with the radio. Is it working OK? Is it working for some things, but not others? Perhaps it just needs to be extended or retracted to an appropriate length for what you are trying to receive. I'd say the chances are excellent that you do not need a $170 antenna, but we need more info before making suggestions.

Well I want to listen to as much as I can. I listen to the police department which is phase 2 trunked I think. I listen to the airplanes, coast guard channel 16, and a few fire departments and I have close call on. The antenna is picking up most of these things but I do not know if I am missing anything. I would assume a better antenna would mean I would be able to listen to more things but I do not know. I live downtown area of a city population of about 30k.

Ok. So in your first post, the first antenna you linked to should work well for your local 700 and 800 MHz systems, probably even some stuff for King County to your north. But it won't work that well for aircraft, or VHF Marine, or your neighboring counties whose Public Safety comms are still on VHF or UHF. For those systems your second choice would work better, but that one won't likely pull in King County or Seattle 700/800 stuff very well. So as was mentioned in an earlier post, something broadband would be a good choice. But remember, if it's broadband, it will be a compromise. You can probably pick up Lewis County Sheriff just fine from your location with a VHF specific antenna, but maybe not with a broadband antenna, or maybe not well. See where I'm going here? There isn't one single antenna that will let you pick up everything you can.
That being said, a good place to start is a wideband antenna, and even better if you can mount it in an attic, or on your roof. The Discone mentioned in an earlier post would be a good choice. Keep in mind if you do an outdoor antenna install, and live near TV, or FM radio, or other powerful transmitters, their RF energy can de-sensitize your 536, making it seem deaf when it actually isn't, especially on VHF. Where I live I have to run a series of notch filters inline in order to eliminate that kind of interference. Once I added those my 536 worked like a champ when hooked up to my outdoor antenna.
Hope that helps.

Are you custom programming your 536 with Sentinel, or running it in "Home Patrol" mode? If you're not custom programming your radio, I recommend you do. That way you can program in stuff from your neighboring counties, like Lewis, or Kitsap, add an alert tone for each of those, and then keep an eye or ear out for those distant systems as you're experimenting with antennas. Also program in some distant weather channels, see how well your receiving those. If you're scanning Home Patrol style, and you set your range to say 50 miles, your 536 is going to take a long time on each scan cycle to chug through a whole bunch of channels, and much of it will be stuff you're not really interested in. It works far better if you put in just the stuff that you want to hear. With a good antenna you should be picking up 800/700 stuff out to 15, 20 or maybe even 25 miles away. For VHF/UHF its considerably farther: 40, 50 miles or more is not uncommon. Use that as a rough guide and build yourself some Favorites Lists if you haven't already.

Another vote for something else. That "5dB" antenna is no way that good. Maybe 5dB over the stock antenna... It looks like a 3dB mobile antenna mounted on a bracket with a ground plane added. Certainly not worth the price IMHO. If you want to focus on the 700/800 band, you can get a gain antenna for that that will work just *okay* on VHF/UHF. I enjoy building my own, so I built a gain antenna for 800 that works extremely well at 450 and 700/800, but is just okay on VHF. That said, I'm sitting here listening to NOAA full-scale from 25-30 miles away, and flipping through the channels, I can hear other stations from 50-60+ out.

Antennas for scanning multiple bands are always a compromise, so you have to figure out what you want to really listen to and go from there. I listen to 700/800 or UHF 99.5% of the time and am fine with it being a compromise on VHF. If you really want to listen to VHF & up, there are probably some better multi-band options.

I do use sentinel and made channels and I guess I have figured out why so many of you have multiple scanners I am assuming people have multiple antennas also. And for the weather channels I can pick up only one with the stock antenna. Too bad there isn't a antenna that's compact and can pick up everything.

Figure that out, and you'll be a billionaire. Curse you, Physics!!

Although, this is interesting (but still a compromise):
