• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

What should it be? I'm not in Portland but I can pass on the message
Aww man, you caught my edit! I'm in the real Portland not that one, where the pay is not insultingly low for "experienced" techs.

So what should the number be for experienced Vesta Techs? Inquiring minds want to know.

Research the pay scale for skill positions in other fields: IT techs, HVAC techs, automotive techs, welders, diesel mechanics, machinists, etc - positions that take similar intelligence and a comparable amount of training.

Salary Range $28.00 - $33.00 Hourly.
When employees post salary ranges, what it really means is you're getting the bottom. Almost no one ever gets the top number. So this job is really $28/hr. 2,080 hours per year X $28 = $58,240. $58k ain't what it used to be. Plus traveling 25% of the time?

You also need to tell applicants what the exact benefits are. "Comprehensive health and wellness benefits." is too vague. How much does insurance cost, what company is it, how much are the deductibles & co-pays? Is there any paid time off?

Our radio techs at our county make more than that, get take home vehicles, 403-B, best insurance available, vested after 5 years. 58 grand a year for specialized skilled technical labor? Good luck with that. As I said before, the average Chick-Fil-A store manager here makes more than that, gets profit sharing bonuses, every Sunday off and many holidays off.

I will admit that half my old military (Guard and active duty) crew once worked at Day Wireless, they all moved on to bigger waters....FEMA, State, local, tribal comms, and other private sector jobs. They went where the money and benefits were. Day Wireless gave them experience, while the military gave them a formal education.

Good luck in your search.

Given the EXTREMELY niche market to actually find a TRUE radio tech today, I wouldn't even post a salary range. Just end the ad with "We'll make it worth your while".

Starting next year in CA the minimum wage for fast food workers will be $20/hr and many of those jobs you can teach someone in an hour or two. So compare a kid just out of high school with zero experience, no ambition and no common sense to someone with years of two way radio troubleshooting, repair skills, some networking skills, maybe a GROL, etc. I think some out of work radio techs will be coming to CA to flip burgers soon.

So where is the real salary gap problem in this case? Is it some two way radios shops are out of touch with salary requirements? Maybe just too cheap? Or is it states like CA redistributing wealth giving more credit to those without vs those with skills and willing to work?

While I and a handful of others are responsible for an Astro system core with DSR backup site, I just found out one of the IT folks was tasked with being our Vesta Administrator as an additional duty. He was already in charge of the Nice logging recorder (virtual server), now he gets phones too. I doubt he is getting more money for that extra work though. We are now going to try to "harmonize" our prefixes for cities (old school Spillman CAD in use and now FLEX CAD with Vesta phone system), to make it easier for dispatchers/call takers.

I was in Central Oregon for quite a few years working as a TIG welder, didnt work extraordinarily hard, and made good money for the area. It was good enough where we could do two vacations a year. Corona hit and my industry was hit hard. I started looking for work in the worst economy and times in recent memory. I went up to Seattle to do an interview at a really big rocket shop up there, and was dissappointed at the offered pay....$43k for senior experienced aerospace welder, the equivalent experience of a CET Master Tech, for installer pay. I went into it asking and not going to take less than $90k. It was a fun visit!

I am now working my ass off, busting my knuckles, dealing with crap work that we have to rip out and re-do, learning a bunch, making new connections around town, experiencing the real side of radio. When will the money and wages match the level of work I (we) put in? When will employers value us as putting money in their pockets?

This is for Phoenix, Houston, and SLC-UT areas and this is for the first 40 hours with overtime paid separately.......I hired both an Vesta and an Avtec gurus and they were both very close to 100k. P25 guru with every cert Moto has is mid 90s. Mototrbo guru with some avtec, vesta, SIP, and server experience is low 80s. I think I pay well and still have a hard time finding folks. Still looking for installers and Mototrbo gurus. But, I am also minting new ones by taking your guys and submerging them as an apprentice. The pay scales in our industry is driving good folks away....... TT.

Pay for the industry needs to begin aligning itself with the IT world. It is clear the majority of work these days is IT, plus the additional knowledge required of RF, controls, electrical, vehicle mechanics, HVAC, analog phone lines, voip, etc. It is in essence highly specialized, and highly critical, specialized IT work and salaries should reflect that. Particularly for those that know what they are doing, as there are plenty who I’m not convinced can open the packaging on the equipment.

Our county is in the process of realigning our radio systems techs to higher paying grade salaries. We are also expected to do more heavy lifting when it comes to things like dispatch consoles, fire station alerting software/clients, and hands of system level stuff, much of it is more IP/IT than RF. Either way, low rent salaries gets one low rent employees with no skills and no motivation.
