I have found the software to be decent once getting to know where all the features are. Similar to APX a small change when you're use to the other previous stuff.
As for its speed or lag, I run a 32gb system with 2tb hard drive and haven't had issues. Writing and reading may take small few but if you can live with the slower writing speed it isn't bad when considering the features you're trying to write.
Plus channel adding is easier I think on Kenwood than a APX and Motorola where several changes will need to occur if you like to keep things tidy in order. If you have it all over the place then that wouldn't matter.
Scan list can be a set per zone in list you make from multiple zones or scan a single zone which is the easiest way I think with saving time.
As mentioned it does nxdn/ analog out of box, with licenses you could get dmr, p25 but cannot have all 3 going same time in a radio, it's either nxdn and p25 or dmr and nxdn etc. As far as I recall.
Other license features available such as trunking, fpp in full keypad, SD card license (radio will record 30 seconds with internal memory if they get the page out in that time), increased channel capacity license is optional also.
Once configured and properly setup the nx5200 is a very good radio. One suggestion is to put the timers for scan at same, I set A and B to lowest look back and haven't had issue or the usual Kenwood skip in audio. Then set priority 2 in scan and haven't missed any traffic.
MDC I could care less about muting but some focus on this. Kenwood will mute the pre MDC if you set the timer right and other radios have pre MDC but post MDC mute is no go. I honestly could care less but most focus on the does it chirp and the usual irrelevant bickering on it.
Just find it funny the same ones who slam Kenwood for that will go buy a BK and it doesn't mute MDC either which the newer Bendix Kings in my opinion are junk.
Durability I will say the NX5200 is very good.
It's been dropped accidently onto pavement, concrete, got wet and never had issue minus the typical cosmetic scuffs.
Heat wise in your structure fire it did very well. Only thing I noticed is the PTT button on the shoulder mic did lift a tad barely noticeable, and the cord even under a bunker coat collar seemed to slightly melt in one tiny spot but was still coated.
But without properly testing two side by side, same conditions (Kenwood vs other) that was and time in with exposure to that very heated situation compared to many others, exposure to flash over for most part can't be considered a vs or bickering thing. The mic still worked and hasn't had issue so 10/10.
The password feature is good and the startup password can be done with the limited keypad model, though for police/fire I wouldn't recommend it as if one turns off radio by accident you don't want to be stopping looking at entering a password during a incident. It comes in handy though for a Master radio to send MDC kill commands in event someone stole it or I think ideal for business, public works, security.
The software allows also to have the channel selector knob programmed for continuous spin and the stopper is easily removed and knob stopper can be placed back and programming changed to reflect it but I wouldn't use that in fire and let the keypad go higher than 16 selections.
With the A and B switch on top you can lock the the keys which I think is handy in a gear cost so it limits the possibility of accidental key pressing in a gear coat during a active scene. I want to say the PTT can be locked also in settings with the lock switch but don't hold me on that but if I recall it would.
The only complaint I have had is dealing with a local Kenwood dealer who mostly pushes Motorola stuff we use to have mainly on work level. I know you're suppose to go to local region dealer but the delay in reply, to ignoring a decent order for a small dept plus any personal stuff I have thought about Evans and if it is possible just going through him as he comes through with things which I'll be contacting him soon as personal dealings has been rated very good.
To me I personally rate it 10/10 and Evans is very helpful in these forums when he has time to surf them.
