• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have one handheld that has version 2.57 and another handheld that has firmware 1.18, can I upgrade both of these handhelds to the latest firmware? Can I download the firmware from Kenwoods site?

Thanks

No, not without dealer access. Your best bet is to contact a Kenwood dealer. They will upgrade your firmware for you, or if you have the software and cable they can get you the .hex file and you could do it yourself.

I think 2.83 is the latest firmware, but I'd need to check on that.

You'll need the file, plus the "FPRO" program which should have loaded with the programing software. It's not hard to do the actual upgrade, but as Ramal suggested, you might have a hard time getting the dealer to just give it to you.

I have a nx-800 that has 3.0 do the handhelds and mobile use the same version? I have KPG-111k v2.0 and I can't find the FPRO program.

Local dealer not up to date with these nexedge radios. I asked about firmware and he couldn't find anything except something about version 2 firmware so he didn't know. If he did find the updated firmware I know he would want to update it himself. Don't really care to pay for something that I can do.

I've posted this on any of the other Kenwood NX radio firmware threads, but putting it here so others will be aware before upgrading:

Finally had a chance to sit down and go through all the information on the new firmware.

This is important:

If you update to the latest firmware (3.2) you MUST use the KPG-111DN software to program. The big issue there is that the KPG-111DN only lets you do 12.5KHz narrow bandwidth channels. You cannot program any 25KHz wide bandwidth channels after you upgrade. There is a way to get a key to unlock wide band, but you have to go through Kenwood, and it doesn't look like they make it really easy to do.

So, before you upgrade, you need to decide...

If you are an amateur radio operator, you probably wouldn't want to do this.
If you use them on GMRS, you'd need to decide if you want to put up with narrow band. It's just fine for some, but others, specifically those that use a lot of repeaters, may not want it.
