As far as I know, they assist stranded motorists.

HELP trucks are operated by the NYS Department of Transportation. Where they don't have their own radio system, they operate on local police channels. For example, in the capital area (Albany - I-87/I-90/I-787/NY-7) they use a talkgroup on the Town of Colonie 800 MHz trunked system.

39,

The trucks in the Troop F and Troop NYC areas use NexTels for primary communications. New York City units are also capable of the NYCPD's Traffic Control Division's channels.

On the NYS Thruway 453.4250 pl 97.4
I heard a help truck answer being called as unit 605.
Unit 606 picked up the job instead.

I know this was a help truck because a troop car asked NY if there where any help trucks
available.

help trucks on ltr

I havent heard any comms on this either as Ive programmed it since monday. This may be an alternate system used sparingly. I havent seen the help trucks in quite awhile here in long island. I travel southern state and meadowbrook every day and used to see them daily??!!

I haven't listened to them in probably 6 months..
but they were only active on the LTR system during "rush hour".

You'd hear them end their tour and give final mileage at the end of the morning and evening drive times. During the afternoon or late evenings and overnights, you wouldn't hear anything out of them....

As far as the last channel being out of range, try chaning it to LCN 20 instead of 21 (since LTR has a max of 20 channels)

Like I said, my info was printed out and I lost the documentation. This was from the old Fordyce days, and I was picking them up fine when I was listening to them.

You never really heard much.. Just their location, the plate and vehicle description of the person in need.. then they would come back on with a progress report, and then that they were back on patrol. Each transmission was probably less than 20 to 30 seconds.

Hope this helps a little. I'll try putting them back into my radio this weekend, and taking another listen during next week.
