Many times when listening to NYPD SOD frequency I hear the dispatcher after a high priority call state U4 or U5 read. I believe these are supervisor vehichles, Does anyone have a photo or know what type of unit is used for the SOD supervisor vehicles. Also do they respond to all boros

Thanks
Mark

I believe ESU-4 & 5 are the LTs who drive unmarked crown vics. Vehicle type may have changed, it's been several years since I saw one.

Yes the "U" cars are Lieutenants and drive unmarked cars. The "Adam" "Boy" etc cars are the smaller trucks with 2 police officers. The "truck" cars are the large trucks with a PO and a Sergeant.

U4 is Manhattan and Bronx, U5 is Brooklyn and Queens. They vehicle varies but they are almost alway unmarked SUVs.

If you hear U3, U2 or even U1 those are even bigger bosses.

I know there have been a lot of changes since 9/11, but for a good starting point about NYPD ESU/SOD take a look at some of the old books from Samuel Katz, One was called Anywhere Anytime; and there was another called E-Man Life on the Streets or something similar.

To this day has a lot of good info about ESU

I have one called "NYPD: on the streets with the elite Emergency Service Unit". Circa 1995.

Good question.

I think they added Staten Island to ESU-5 (U5) area of supervision. Once upon a time SI was out there on their own and did their own thing with respect to Hwy and ESU.

Circa 1995, 5 Truck was known as Highway Emergency Service and was under control of the Borough Command, not SOD. That may have changed in the past 17 years.

Yes I remember that SI was independent. But that all changed after the ESU reorg post 9/11.

Also U4 and U5 are usually LTs but could be SGTs. Either way they are the "citywide" supervisors.

ESU CMD

ESU Command is supervised by the Special Operations Cmd. So on the radio at times you will hear "SOD 1" who is the division commander (a Deputy Chief or Assistant Chief). "SOD 2" is the division's Exec. officer (Inspector or Deputy Chief).

Under the SOD Cmd are the following units:
Aviation Unit
Disorder Control
Canine Unit
Emergency Service Unit
Emergency Medical Squad
Harbor Unit
Haz-mat / WMD
Mounted Unit

These above units are headed by persons between the ranks of Inspectors to Sgt's.

ESU:
ESU - 1 Commanding Officer - Deputy Chief or Inspector
ESU - 2 Exec Officer - Inspector or Deputy Inspector
ESU - 3 Duty Captain
ESU - 4 Duty Supervisor - Manhattan & Bronx (Lieut or Sgt.)
ESU - 5 Duty Supervisor - Bklyn, Queens, & Staten Is. (Lieut or Sgt.)
ESU - 6 Spare Duty Supervisor
ESU - 7 & above - Special Assignment Supervisors.

I hope this is a help.
