Hi, just got my first scanner and have been listening to Manhattan CW1-4, unit/zone channels, etc.

however all of the traffic seems to be to/from central, and not between the police on the street.

based on the signal strengths it seems like the system is repeated to hit central. but how do the NYPD talk amongst themselves, the TAC A-W freqs and low power in local range?

or are they operating somewhere else w/ encryption?

tips?

You'll hear "Go to G" (TAC G) usually on SOD from aviation, harbor and ESU units. You need to be close to hear them. I have also confirmed usage on TAC A, TAC E and 482.412 (R). CW 1 is closed for Occupy Wall Street details. As an aside, punch in 486.1125 for FDNY handi/talkies.

As N2SCV suggests above, when field units are too far away from each other to use a TAC channel (since it is low power simplex), they will use a Boroughwide channel instead - which is repeated and not (normally) controlled by a Central. photon0, since you mentioned that you are focused on Manhattan, make sure to add 471.0625 (110.9) to your scan list.
