I am looking to find out what type of antenna's are installed on the rear (edge) of the trunks on some NYPD cars. Its a short stubby antenna. Im looking for what it is used for and who makes it. If anyone can provide any info, I would appreciate it.

i think i know the antenna you are talking about. it is black, maybe 5-7 inches tall adn about 2 in wide at the base and tapers up to maybe an inch diameter.

is that what you are talking about?

I saw one the other day near 39th/7th on my way to work on an RMP. I forget the car number though.

NYPD radio cars have MDT terminals in them, so perhaps that's what the antenna is for. Most RMPs do not have mobile radios.

Yes, seems to be the same thing im talking about. I have noticed they were very close to the back edge of the trunk. 5-7" may even be a bit tall but its thick all the way up. I keep trying to catch a pic of it so I can post it but havent had a good opportunity. From what I've heard, I think it may be for MDT's. I know they produce that type of antenna in a different bands so I am looking for the manufacturer at worst.

I think it might be for the GPS tracking systems that are being installed in the cars now. Usually the base loaded spring antenna is used for the MDT's because they operate in the 484MHz range.

Sorry if it is a bit blurry. I did not want to get questioned by taking a pic of a cop car while the PD was inside it.

This is what the original post was about yes?

Outside of a very limited number of Highway Patrol cars, Global Positioning System tracking systems are not being installed in any other cars and there is not plan for such a system to be installed - at least not in the remainder of this fiscal year or the next.

The antenna at the bottom of the number 8 decal on the trunk lid is for the mobile digital terminal. The antenna on the right hand rear fender (the one that appears to be touching the taxi in the background) is for the standard equipment AM/FM radio in the dashboard. The antenna behind the two right-most red pods on the light bar on the roof (actually center mounted, spring loaded on the roof) is for the two way mobile radio.

PS to AEMTKieran,
RE cars equipped with mobile two-way radios: the balance is tipping toward more with them then without them.

When did they start putting radios back in the cars? I mean, granted, it's been a LONG time since I worked Radio and I went to the courts...but I remember NYPD was almost all portable.

With both my kids as reference, the '05 Crowns had factory radios and that external SCANdal spoke of.Ford went back to rear window (in the glass) antennas in '06 and I guess the AM/FM radio is included in the fleet purchase.

.

actually it is a sort of global positioning system/broadband access terminal in the trunks of the RMP's. i saw a few in my old command it is made by Cisco and has 4 different antenna inputs and outputs. if you look at the front of the 52 pct the widow to the right of the front stairs just above it is a small white panel antenna, that antenna is connected to a cisco systems router type device.

from what i was told it is for the new network access. all of the precincts have been rewired and a few are getting new computers. i was told that the LAN systems in the precinct are going to be available in the rmps.

the patrol supervisors car in the 52 has the unit in the trunk that i spoke about. saw it with my own eyes.

It would not shock me if the city PD goes GPS also.
Suffolk PD has had it for years and Nassau County PD just completed their installations.
In both Nassau and Suffolk, the antenna used is a circular white disk on the trunk about 3 inches wide.

I did a ride along with a British Bobby in London and all their cars have GPS mapping in them. It was impressive. When I worked for Maricopa County Sheriff in Arizona I had my own GPS with me as I did not the area well. I would just punch in the address and be on my way.

Stay safe,
Kevin

This was what I was talking about. Thanks kc2gog. Unforutnately, I was hoping it was used for two-way radio traffic as its low profile and what I'm looking for

From what I understand Scan, that stubby black antenna on the rear edge of the trunk is for MDT, not 2 way traffic. I heard that style of antenna is not very good for 2 way traffic. Do I have incorrect info?

Luke,

Oh, I see - you're interested in aesthetics and performance :).

Yes, your understanding is correct - but how the NYPD opts to use what antennas for what purpose should have no bearing on how you end up using a specific model of antenna.

Regarding performance issues...if your benchmark is a UHF fullwave fix-mounted on your car's roof compared to one of these hard stubs mounted on your trunk lid, then yes, the fullwave will perform better. If you move the stub to your rooftop that will perform better then the same antenna mounted on a trunk lid (which will perform better then one mounted on a fender). The comparsion one can draw, using portable radios as our example, is the debate over whip and stubby antennnas. Yes, stubbys will work - but whips work better by transmitting the RF the radio generates when you key the mic better. I'll ask you this...what systems are you looking to access? Local repeaters? Or machines in Connecticut somewhere? Quite honestly, if you're going for a certain look, I wouldn't worry too much about the few dBs difference of a somewhat lesser efficient antenna.

It's my experience that the City acquires the best equipment money can buy from the lowest bidder. Appearance rarely, if ever, is a consideration.

This may or may not have something to do with a new (or proposed) citywide IT project. I forget whats its called, but it involved the FDNY, NYPD and other city services for radio and data services.

I'll see if I can find it, but looked to be very expensive, but cool.
