is it the fault of Police Officers that the price of homes is that high? how many jobs in the public or private sector tell there employee's when and where they can live? not many.
No, just don't buy something you can't afford. If you make $60,000 a year and think you can afford a $3000 a month mortgage, you need a reality check. I make substantially more than NYPD (almost double) and I couldn't afford it. Isn't that what's going on with the mortgage crisis? People bought homes they couldn't afford and are now paying the price. And what's wrong with renting? I grew up in an apartment. My parents never owned a home. I rented until I had saved enough for a downpayment and was in a position financially to purchase the home I'm in now. It's a radical concept, I know.
Philadelphia Police top pay:
$53,444
Chicago Police top pay:
$58,896
I'm sure it's expensive to live in those cities too. And they don't get a choice of 11 counties, they are required to live
IN the city limits. Visit their websites if you don't believe me.
And what about these guys:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/community/ems_salary_benefits_042607.shtml $39,000 after 5 years.
I don't hear them complain about crappy pay, they just complain about working conditions and being treated like a stepchild by the FDNY.
If you want a six figure salary, seek another job or vote Pat Lynch out of office and get a PBA president who can get you a decent raise as other unions in the city have gotten. You took the job knowing what the pay was. Learn to live within your means.
