I am just curious to know why the beat repeater repeater has a stronger signal then VR02. Why does some O.P.P detachments use beat instead of VR02. Yet I have heard one place simulcast on both.

BEAT repeaters and Vehicular Repeaters (VR's) are two different things.

A BEAT repeater is typically located on a tower close by to where officers do "beat" patrols on foot. It gives them coverage while they are out walking the beat. They could be a couple of km's away from the tower.

A VR is located on a vehicle and provides coverage to the officer while he is away from his vehicle. The officer generally doesn't stray too far from his vehicle.

A detachment will only have a beat repeater if they do beat patrols. The officers on beat will use the beat repeater. Other officers from the same detachment will typically use the vr in their vehicle.

The good thing about the BEAT Repeater also is that it's usually simulcasting the talkgroup in which the area it's in is using.

Therefore chances are you can hear all the other detachments in a certain county also.

My County has 4 detachments that use the same talkgroup so I can hear the whole county, which is very large in nature too.

It's great if your near one especially if you don't have a digital scanner.

There are a couple of locals that i have driven through that use beat and VR02. U can here simulcasts from the whole talkgroup as you said. I have heard cases where The officer that transmits on his portable has bounced off one of the other repeaters given the wrong ID to the dispatch. But he/she recognizes the voice , so they are able to identify who it is. Just interesting how the repeaters affect the transmission in relation to vicinity of the radio. Where I live in Eastern Ontario. I can here 3 counties on one talkgroup.

I don't think it's so much the voice but the actual radio it self that they can ID.

Have ya ever noticed though, while travelling through different parts of Ontario that even if you go to Southern Ontario while listening to the radio, that the dispatcher's actually 'sound' the same as the one's in Eastern Ontario.

And yes, I've listened to your area online before and I must say, you too also have very good coverage with your local Repeater's.

It's also nice when they patch through Sim11 to one of the talkgroups. That too can net you some good listening coverage. I've been able to hear the cars on the 401 near Brockville nice and clear. However I wasn't able to hear the Comm Centre.

Portables cannot be identified. The dispatcher receives the ID of whatever repeater (beat or vr) that the portable was retransmited through.

Ya that's what I thought, when I had mentioned about the dispatch not being able to identify the portable only the repeater. The officer had bounced off of the other cars repeater. Portables are still analog. They can be used with any vr02 repeater. The repeater be rigged in somehow to the digital radio to convert analog/digital when using the portables. Portables are universal.
Any officer can use a portable with anycar, doesnt have to be his specifically

They are using a Futurecom mobile repeater, which is completly controllable by the mobile radio (Astro Spectra). It doesn't really convert the analog to digital, rather, it takes the RX audio from the Spectra which is already in analog form at this point, and retransmits it out onto a UHF channel. The same happens in reverse.

For a BEAT repeater, they used to just have a mobile setup in a detatchment or whatever and use an external antenna...I don't know, but I can only assume they do the same for the new Fleetnet radios (ie, have the Futurecom and Spectra mounted inside somewhere on an outside antenna).
