Reside in Union County. Monitor Union, Franklin and some other surrounding counties. This week my BCD996T has gone pretty silent. I am guessing Union County has moved to the next level radio system. Can anyone confirm this for me? If so, I guess my BCD996T is now extinct in this area.

Have a Great Week!

Check the Marcs IP thread, Check the database.

The 996 will work just fine on the new IP system (at least for the foreseeable future).

Relocated and Retired

Recently moved to Fairborn, Ohio, and want to listen to local Fairborn Fire & PD, Greene County, Montgomery County, and amateur radio repeaters. Thinking about getting the Uniden BCD436HP and wondering if this scanner would be appropriate for my area. My old scanner is dead in this area for trunk systems (BC330t) and I got rid of my 396xlt. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

The BCD436HP should work very good for you in Fairborn. Virtually all Greene County Fire and LE are using the Ohio MARCS-IP system (specifically the Greene Co Simulcast "site").

You can also still here some activity on the WPAFB trunk system, though most of TGs are encrypted.

Thanks very much for that! My wife works on the base at the hospital and I was hoping to fine tune to hospital security and paging, etc., as well as the local LE and EMT/Fire Channels. Going to be quite a change up for me as I used to live one street away from the Gulf in Dunedin, Florida, and really enjoyed all the scanning there. Tracking hurricanes, maritime chatter, all of that will be missed. I'm sure WPAFB MilComms (Air tower coms) should be interesting, if they are not encrypted. Again, thanks for your reply!

Your 330T will receive Dayton and Montgomery County which are still analog trunked, as well as the AM aviation frequencies for Dayton and Wright - Pat.

The 436 is an excellent choice. I have a HomePatrol-II which also works well when I am in that area.

Hello, I'm a misplaced Mountaineer located in the suburbs of Pickerington. That's on the east side just outside of Columbus.

The folks over at Universal Radio over on Americana Blvd helped me choose a Uniden BCD396XT. I am a super novice user so they helped me start out with a template of systems. I am currently monitoring Franklin and Fairfield county area. This is a great hobby to me, I enjoy listening to the scanner, I find it's more interesting then what's on TV.

Hello, I reside south of Pickerington in Fairfield County and work in Grandview Heights. I've listened to scanners for about 25 years. Let's say my first was a BC-200XLT that I bought on special at Penny's Outlet for $75 new. I got out of the hobby when systems started going digital and I had to make that choice of buy a digital scanner to keep up or let go of the hobby. Back then I had a discriminator tapped scanner that decoded MDT data; oh the pornographic things that were said. It wasn't encrypted, perfectly legal.

I've been fortunate over the years to always cross paths in various ways with this hobby: sometimes doing service work for police departments, once even having an issued HT from OSU. My current job involves fire code and life safety code and once again I'm crossing paths with the hobby. My most recent venture has my company installing bi-directional amplifiers for public safety radio within new buildings and performing annual inspections on previously installed BDA systems. Just this week I had my hands on a working 700 MHz HT doing coverage tests in a building on the new MARCS-ip system.

My only scanning set up at the moment consist of two RTL-SDRs using Unitrunker. I also have another RTL-SDR that I play with and a HackRF One that I have yet to decide what to do with. Without having an incredible antenna setup the reception has been dismal. Here's to hoping my new venture lands me an assigned HT.

Fairborn OH since 1984. First scanner was a Tenelec acquired by trading a Sony Tape Recorder in 1978. Have had numerous Radio Shack and Bearcats over the years. Usually monitor Greene, Clark and Montgomery counties and Wright Patterson AFB. Current scanners are listed below. I'll probably pick up a Whistler 1080 and 1095 by the end of the year..

Erie and Cuyahoga Counties

Dan here,

live in Erie County. I monitor EVERYTHING public safety wise in the county on UHF. I also monitor Division of Watercraft and Post 22 on the Ohio MARCS.

I have relatives, and my doctor is in Cleveland in Cuyahoga. I monitor various things on The Greater Cleveland Communications Network, and on Ohio MARCS. When in town, I also like to monitor the West Shore suburbs and the Cleveland MetroParks, because I grew up in North Olmsted.

Also, because my Civil Air Patrol squadron resides at the Lorain County Regional Airport, I monitor all public safety vhf/uhf/MARCs and air band there too.

I am a railfan too. Rail Band.

This is in addition to all my hf/vhf/uhf ham stuff.

As you can see, I have a wide range of scanning "needs".

Scanning out of Wilmington (Clinton County) on a 396xt with a cheap Radioshack ground plane on a 20ft homemade mast. I mostly listen to the Clinton Co site on MARCS-IP and Highland Co SO & Hillsboro PD on analog + anything Railroad. Been mostly focusing on the analog stuff at home due to my makeshift antenna setup- It's great for public service (-hearing stuff all the way to KY!) but extremely poor at 700-800. Have a mobile antenna on the car that's great at 700-800 for on the go. I've only been scanning since March, and didn't realize how steep the learning curve would be. This site has been a great help, for figuring out not only how to scan, but how to use the 396xt as well.

I'm scanning from the south end of Columbus / Franklin County. I have a BCD396XT. I'm new to this and figuring things out slowly. If anyone has time to help a newbie, let me know. I'm afraid of asking stupid questions or posting in the wrong places.

If its system specific you may want to ask in here. If its radio specific I'd ask in the Uniden Tech Support or Tavern forum. You'll find most people are very helpful - just don't post the same question in two or three places and if you misplace it the moderators will move it.

There are no stupid questions. [emoji106]

If your computer savvy I HIGHLY recommend you get a membership and some programming software. That is how I loaded my BCT15

Thank you for the help. I'm learning as fast as I can and loving this.

I have the Public Safety trunk site working great and playing with the different groups and settings.
I see a lot of messages about the MARCS IP. Besides the Public Safety and MARCS IP trunking sites are there any other sites or configurations you can recommend to keep learning and having fun?
