Well Duh

I just realised that all passwords are different every time I get a new copy of Fastlane. I have deleted all the previous emails and therefore have no real way of getting back to the point I am now should I have a catastrophic crash. Is there a way to get my previous emails and passwords?

The issue in particular (and someone can correct me if I am wrong) is that if I download 1.01 and then apply 1.97 to it, the documentation is still from 1.01. Why aren't docs sent each time considering they take up so little space.

Cheers

Don't you keep your old emails?
Other than that, you could ask DSDPlus team if they keep your old copies and send them to you.

Well Duh

That sounds unlikely. All of my updates use the same password and I've seen where others have reported on their ability to download new updates as soon as they're made aware of them, rather than having to wait for a notification email. That wouldn't be possible if every update used a unique password.

Uh, make a backup?

Docs are the least of your problems. The Notes file is the Fast Lane "documentation" and it's been updated/included in every FL release I've ever got:

This text file describes all features that have been added to DSD+ and its supporting programs since the 1.101 public release.

More importantly, you can't just dump a single FL update into a 1.101 folder:

If you are NOT a new Fast Lane member:

Your Fast Lane update will only contain files that have been changed in this update and they should ALL be copied to your existing DSD+ Fast Lane folder.

If you've borked your FL installation by dumping 1.97 on top of 1.101, your best bet is to ask for a full FL update that has all FL files and drop that into a 1.101 folder.

And speaking of backups...

NOTE! YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR CURRENT DSD+ FOLDER BEFORE APPLYING A FAST LANE UPDATE!

YOU SHOULD ALSO PERIODICALLY BACK UP YOUR DSD+ DATA FILES

Interesting you say that. This is the exact point I am trying to make. Thanks for your 'TIP' on keeping backups but as I said, I haven't for whatever reason kept backups of FL updates. I have only been a FL member for 6 or so months and have only now discovered that I need to keep all versions and associated emails with passwords because of the very reason you mention.

LET ME BE CLEAR. Everything I have is working BUT in the event I lose my computer right now I only have the working directory of DSDPlus on the full backup of my computer and couldn't build it up from multiple FL .ZIPS. And to be honest even if I had to it would be quite a process trying to unnzip all the incremental updates so I have a complete folder. So yes the only option would be to request a full FL update.

That sounds unlikely. All of my updates use the same password

Well I can assure you mine DON'T. I wouldn't be posting that they're different if they weren't. I would have just found the updates I needed in the files provided.

=======

Anyway for all the kiddies playing along at home this is a quick heads up. Keep your emails and FL files UNLIKE MYSELF. I will rely on my normal computer backup.

Cheers

If you have a working current version of FL you can simply make a copy of the entire DSDPlus folder and you will have a backup. My whole folder containing all of my DSDPlus is only 10mb

Why would you want to restore by installing the FL updates? They have none of the data that resides in your networks, sites, groups, radios, frequencies, P25data or siteLoader files, so you wouldn't actually have a complete folder. Maintaining a decent, recent backup makes far more sense.

Since the first day I subscribed to DSD+ FL updates my password has been the same each time an update is released. So has many many other fastlaners. Why would only one have a different password each time? I seriously doubt the DSD+ FL team has enough time to keep changing passwords for each zip file.

Has your email changed since you paid for Fastlane?
That could trigger a password change if they use a hash of your email to generate the password for the zip file.

I did change my email for FL when I retired but I sure don't know if that changed the password as I keep all my old emails.

Something must change the password as it seems to be based off your name or other info given when you make payment.

I have only seen 2 FL passwords. They changed it only once to a much longer one.

Instead of congesting this forum, just email the DSD+ team for a copy. Nobody is going to give you theirs.

Ensure your 12 month subscription has not lapsed too... I bought a lifetime one.

I back up the text config files by copy + paste into a new directory called "Backup" or whatever. Simple. Or right-click on the entire folder and rar / zip it up.

I have about 5 hard drives and each has a backup folder for which I back important stuff up. If one hdd crashes, I have backups. Oh and back up your back ups too!

You seem to be the only person who has a different password with each update - seems unlikley.

You don't necessarily need EVERY update since 1.101 but as a subscriber there would be a few you would need:
The first FL you received (as this is unique to you)
FL updates that added NEW files since your intital copy (eg 2.169 if you were subscribed before that)
current version

Different people work in different ways but I like to keep a second DSD directory which I update but don't actually use. It remains as a 'clean' current version if I mess up anything in my working copy. The data files are of less concern to me as I don't really need them but it would be simple enough to do incremental backups using a script run from the batch files used to start the actual DSD batch.
