If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

My Dad has cancer. Since he's not as mobile as he once was, he's decided to get back into CB radios like he did when he was a teen (50+ years ago). He's gotten some decent units through ebay so far to build out a small desk in his room where he's staying at my sister's in Baltimore City.

Questions:
- What could I look for to help him add to his "shack"? He's got a decent rooftop antenna, Cobra base, mics and power supplies already. Any other ideas?

- Is there anyone in the Canton/Patterson Park areas who is also active? Would be nice to introduce him (a former trucker and avid motorcycle owner) to others in the area. He's going a little stir crazy...

Thanks!

He will hear what’s already present, but what the radio could not filter for comprehension that he’s been missing . . now he can hear it all.

Everyone else sounds clearer, as well.
Better = Farther.

At the back of the radio. Cleans up hash, static, admirably.

These are what I run in the Peterbilt.

As to his location it was one I was near to often a couple of years ago. Used to deliver just north of DC, and run up to Pulaski Hwy @ Kresson to get me a load back to Texas. Food, both directions.

Radio traffic on AM-19 was sorta hit and miss. But I wasn’t there in the early a.m, and was usually backed to the dock as the locals were going home (catching a nap). Funny how my ELD would screw up and I’d have to run paper that day.

The times I was farther north to re-load at Perryville, the southbound run was always concerned about traffic thru the tunnel. The damned scale house at the split. That sort of thing.

From the south headed north, it was mainly a relief to everyone to have some peace after getting thru DC. Kinda quiet, except wanting to know if they could get into any of the usually crowded service areas. Thru the tunnel or over the now-closed bridge, I never cared. I just didn’t want to have to go the long way around the west side.

Your Dad is uniquely well-situated to relay what he hears. He could become fairly well-known if he chose. Being helpful, friendly. He’d be able to hear what a lot of guys couldn’t. Then transmit that info over a wide area.

Knowing his exact air mile distance to the mile markers on the Interstates would be good for radio checks. Get the shy ones to crack their jaws open. I use my GPS and a map for that. I’ve 3-5 Interstates I can hear when at home and can tell men exactly how far. Made note cards. “I’m north of ya about 7.5/miles if you’re at the 12”, sorta thing.

That, and maybe how to adjust their radios to sound better. The W-M Speaker is great for that. Clarity. I’ve had mine 10-years now. They need to kill the talkback and turn down the echo, we can get their power mic sounding good with Mic Gain and mic adjustments. Then everyone else wants in.

The base stations operated by a few men in other cities this way have others waiting for them to key up. Part of the morning routine. O’dark thirty to 0900 or so. Toledo. Knoxville. Houston. (Others).

I’m going thru I may be more likely to key up and ask a question from the regulars. Route. Weather, etc. Gotten good advice that way (turn down the echo, hand). If he was a driver, all this is familiar.

If he’s not getting heard well, that’d be worth fixing.

Some gear, and the antenna system.

Others here are the ones to advise on the antenna Q.

He gets on Sideband, that’s a whole other world as well. Won’t mention freeband.

Good luck. My own experience with bad illness is that an appetite and restful sleep are what matter most. Then family.

Something to do (being of service) is next. Which you are covering. Get him bumped to First Class status and it’ll be a whole new game.

Thanks! He's definitely into tracking skip broadcast locations at night, so anything to cut any noise would be extremely helpful.

I'm clueless as to what all he's got, but I know they're incredible components thus far.

If anyone is into classic base stations, I can get a list of components and see where the gaps are still.

if you want to give your dad something any CB'ER would love.... if you can afford $260 at amazon get the Anytone 5555 N II radio.... it has the noise reduction technology slowmover mentioned in that speaker but built into the radio.... the radio puts out 60 watts and people are using them to talk skip all across the county and to other countries.... obviously see what he is using now??? maybe he has a amplifier that puts out a lot of power already.... but that Anytone 5555 N II receives very well and everyone say's they sound fantastic too..... anyone would love one
