Last I remember, On Star is based on cellphone systems. They primarily used the existing analog cell freqs till the carriers removed analog to get more digital channel availability. On Star was forced to provide digital service then. Actually overall better for them since digital cells carry data better than the analogs did. Like anything in the cell phone realm, no US scanner can receive them (by law) and even if they could, the modulation techniques and encryption make it nearly impossible.

If you have a cell phone antenna it should continue to work fine for digital as well since they didn't change frequencies.

I dont have OnStar or want it, i just want to re-use the antenna depending on what frequency its cut for, But if it is on the old cell system then 850 mhz area would be my guess.

Huh... I thought it was done by satelittes. So it is like a cell tower basically?

It isn't like a cell tower, it IS a cell tower. Onstar has a contract with cell carriers and it is all run on cellular systems.

This is the problem in Wyoming. We have no cell coverage outside of cities. So out of staters will slide into the ditch and hit the onstar button with reckless abandon. Only to have it not work!!!

So they flip out about how the satellites are broken. When I tell them it is cell based, they almost seem taken aback. And i agree. While they never say "satellite", it is certainly implied.

It is absolutely a cell phone based telematics system. And as mentioned, the only satellite component is the GPS system which is of course a receive only positioning system. It just includes that info to the cellular Onstar transmission so they know where you are.

I have been told 800mh. I purchased a new 2004 Buick Le Sabre with onstar. At that time the onstar antenna was located on the back window and was a whip type. It was stolen last week but strangely the onstar still works but lacks some signal strength. I purchased a cheap $12 rear window antenna that just glues on the window over where the receiver on the inside of the read window resides. It sends the antenna signal to the rear view mirror by cable. I have glued it on and will try it today. The rear window is not thick so the signal should easily pass through to the receiver. One internet source told me this cheap antenna would work just fine. The car dealer showed the antenna in his parts list
but you had to buy not only the outside antenna but the receiver behind the rear window glass at
$230. My new car with onstar does not use a window antenna anymore. One would think onstar would sell an antenea. The antenea box did not say for onstar but listed cell phones and other devices. As I said one source said they were using this antenna for on-star successfully.
