The APS105 preselector was discontinued shortly after it was released. I spoke to an Opto rep yeasr ago about it being discontinued. He mentioned that the CPU they used was discontinued and they didn't expect to sell enough units to redesign it using a new processor. He mentioned the extreme dificulty making these units. Something like only 1 in 10 meet specification. Another guy commented on some other CPU issue they never figured out....?? APS105 was sold for less than 2 years. I have the APS104, which does the same thing as the 105 except it only has an analog 10 turn pot to sweep or tune to a specific range.
The APS104 works excellent with frequency counters/scouts/Xplorer. Range is increased sometime by 10X or more in some bands. I found that using a telescpoing antenna tuned to the freq of interested hooked to the APS104 works like a champ. Hooking the APS104 to a scanner and tuning it to what is on the scanner improves reception, however no where near 10X range. On a BCD996T without the APS104, I receive 1 bar on a UHF 460.XXX frequency. With the APS104, the same signal will be at 2 bars. So it's a definent improvement, but not nearly what I see using a APS104 on a freq counter/Xplorer.
I've been thinking about selling my APS104 to raise some cash for a new project, but would not even consider any amount under $650 for the unit - even with it's near dead battery pack......
