Hello everyone, first forum question. Regarding outside antennas whether it is on a house or tower. Can that antenna be hooked up to a mobile or handheld police scanner with the same results. As you may guess, bigtime newbie here. thanks, harrydale

for practical purposes, yes. but keep in mimd that no two receivers are exactly alike even with the same specificafions.

I think your asking will the antenna allow the radios to perform the same....and as rk911 said, no two radios are ever going to be exactly alike in their performance. But the same antenna will work with either...

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in, but I think I've heard talk of what's called overloading. The sensitivity and selectivity may be different for the HH and an external antenna in a saturated area may cause undesirable results.

Be sure your radio is grounded to drain off any static electricity, or worse, lightning. I drew a spark connecting an antenna to a portable and caused the protective diode to do its job.

Also do some research on the coax/feedline. You might gain dB with antenna height, but loose it (and possibly more) due to lousy/incorrect coax.

Hello everyone, first forum question. Regarding outside antennas whether it is on a house or tower.
That's more of a physical question. How high is this antenna? Are you installing from ground level or on a roof top? I have one antenna on a short mast mounted from the roof, and a second antenna that is on a long mast mounted from the ground. The height of the antennas are fairly close to each other.

Can that antenna be hooked up to a mobile or handheld police scanner with the same results. As you may guess, bigtime newbie here.
Generally speaking, the results are the same. But as mentioned here in other replies, all radios are not identical. Different brands, models and intended purpose will have varied results.

I think the biggest thing people don't realize when they install their (first) outdoor antenna is downlead. Coax is not your friend. That signal can be quite strong at the output of the antenna and be completely wiped out by the time it reaches your receiver simply due to attenuation through the downlead coax. The higher the frequency, the greater the loss. It is important to consider the antenna and coax as part of an "antenna system". This would include things like grounding, lightning arrestors, filters and amplifiers/multi-couplers; to name a few. Don't skimp on the quality of the coax.

You drew the spark because your radio was grounded! You should have shorted the antenna to ground to get rid of the static build-up and then connected it to the radio. I keep disconnected antennas grounded by fitting 50ohm terminators when not in use.

Some lightning arrestor should be put before the antenna goes into the coax, the shortest run to a grounding rod, either using the house's main rod directly, or another rod that is in turn grounded to the main rod or fresh water pipe to the street depending on which is used.

Also try to do an interior arrestor or surge protector right before the scanner.
