Many of you are probably aware of Jerome Berg's shortwave radio trilogy - Shortwave Radio Trilogy, by Jerry Berg

I recently had the good fortune to find a copy of "Listening on the Short Waves: 1945 to Today" which was published in 2008. It's a terrific read and has tons of information you can't find anywhere else. Chapter 6 on "Receivers" is 60 pages long and is an invaluable information source.

Not sure how I missed this book for all these years, but I highly recommend it to any SWL if you can find a copy.

Yes, the Osterman book is a fantastic reference. It must have been a true labor of love to put together. I have both the third edition that you linked and the newer fourth edition that covers receivers up to 2013.
All that stuff was way too cool..."The RTTY Listener" (think it was also a monthly bulletin) and "World Press Frequencies"
when actual news was over RTTY (copied many here) on my Universal M-8000 nostalgia just brings me off topic all the time here! it seems?

I received and contributed to the Te RTTY Listener, the book, and also helped include two modes (ARQ-E and Piccolo) into the M-8000.

Fred Osterman gave us receiver fans a great gift with that book.

Another pair of books for those who enjoy HF receivers are "Radio Receivers: Chance or Choice" and "More Radio Receivers ..." by Reiner Lichte. Mainly covers tabletop and some portable radios from the 80's and early 90's.

I think it was 1994 or '95 that WRTH put out the Equipment Buyer's Guide. That one is hard to find but worth seeking out.

I always found the Klinginfuss Utility reference book invaluable on my radio desk.
